This weekend the Ultimate Fighting Championship will come to the Target Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota for UFC on ESPN 3.
The card will be headlined by fearsome strikers Junior Dos Santos and Francis Ngannou with some possible gems hidden lower on the billing.
Veteran of the sport Demian Maia will be on the main card competing against up and comer Anthony ‘Rocco’ Martin. Eryk Anders will be looking to bounce back from his recent string of losses after being touted as a hot prospect.

UFC on ESPN 3 – What to Watch

Ngannou vs Dos Santos
The obvious choice.
Ngannou vs Dos Santos

The obvious choice has to be the main event with two titans of the heavyweight division looking to throw hammers in an explosive match up at the top of the card.
The 13-3 Ngannou is coming off his first round demolition of heavyweight great Cain Velasquez. Comparatively Dos Santos 25-5 is riding a three fight win streak since dropping his title bout to Stipe Miocic.
With both fighters known for avoiding the judges this is a must watch bout.

Demian Maia vs Anthony Martin

Veteran of the sport Demian Maia 26-9 will be taking on the always interesting Anthony Martin 16-4.
This fight could involve some exciting scrambles as the tenacious ground game of Maia pressures the inventive Martin. Having shown issues with pressure grappling in the past, Martin will have a hard night surviving Maia’s world class game.
This could be an exciting bout or it could be the time to grab a drink.

As we look further down the card you will get to see Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series contract winners looking to improve their UFC records.
Alonzo Menifield 8-0 was awarded a contract after his stoppage win over Dashawn Boatwright 3-2 on season two of DWTNCS.
Roosevelt Roberts 8-0 is another season two stand out who has since scored two victories in the UFC. Roberts is looking to extend his undefeated run against Vinc Pichel 11-2. This will not be easy as Pichel is looking to impress after the recent submission loss.

The Struggle

Eryk Anders
Eryk Anders will be looking to get back to the win column this weekend at UFC on ESPN 3.

The rest of the card feels like filler with a lot of not-so-hot prospects and the occasional recognizable name like Eryk Anders 11-4 to grab your attention. Because of this the card feels typical of non Pay-Per-View cards in the modern era of the UFC and with title shots and number one contender spots being disputed on the PPV cards, these smaller events can be left feeling lacking. You could be forgiven for not realizing there is a card taking place this weekend. Just not a lot of potential.

With names like Maurice Greene 7-2 from recent The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters and Dalcha Lungiambula 9-1 making his debut there are some interesting stories.
Emily Whitemire 4-2 will be welcoming Amanda Ribas 6-1 to the octagon in the Brazilian’s UFC debut as the only Women’s match up on the card.

Emily Whitmire

Exciting prospect Ricardo Ramas 12-2 is looking to come back from a loss against UFC newcomer Journey Newson 7-1. Ramas suffered a nasty stoppage in his last bout against Said Nurmagomedov 13-1 so he will be looking to make a statement in the octagon debut of Newson.

The man with an amazing personal story of overcoming adversity Jared Gordon 14-3 returns to the cage to take on Dan Moret 13-5. Moret has lost both of his fights since being signed to the UFC and needs a win in order to stay on the big show. Gordon was an exciting prospect when the UFC signed him but he has since showed holes in his game going 2-2 since arriving in the UFC.
