Week 21 in Major League Soccer saw plenty of penalties, scoring, and drama. Below we recap every game in the MLS this past week.
New York FC VS Sporting Kansas City Recap
Sporting Kansas City has been slumping the past several matches. Their defense has almost been nonexistent. This game would see its fair share of fouls. There would be a total of nine fouls in the first half with Maxime Chanot (NYFC) and Roger Espinoza (SKC) both being shown yellow cards before the first half was over. The second half fared no better in fouls; a total of 13 more fouls would be committed in the second half including a red card shown to Roger Espinoza of Kansas City. NYFC would go on to win this match 3-1
LAFC VS Atlanta United Recap
The score board was lit up in Los Angeles on Friday night. Atlanta United came into this game trying to turn their struggles on the road around. They would come out swinging in the second minute of play and score a goal. After the first goal was scored LAFC turned up the pressure and scored four goals to Atlanta’s two before the first half whistle.
The second half would see a strange substitution that quite possibly lost Atlanta the game. In the 59′ Atlanta took out Gonzalo ‘Pity” Martinez for Ezequiel Barco. Atlanta went on to score another goal but ultimately lose it 4-3.
New England Revolution VS Orlando City Recap
New England is on an absolute tear right now. They came into this game winners of 10 straight games. The last time these teams faced each other was during the US Open Cup in May. This was before Bruce Arena took over the team and completely turned them around. It didn’t take long for the Revs to go up 1-0, in fact it came in the third minute of play by Gustavo Bou. This will be the only score during the first halve of play. The Revs would go onto score three more goals in the second half while conceding one in the 77′ to Tesho Akindele.
New England shot 20 times with 6 being on goal while Orlando shot 17 with 8 being on goal. Orlando also lead in possession time at 58% of play time.
NY Red Bulls VS Columbus Crew Recap
This match would see the New York Red Bulls first on the board via a goal from Brian White in the 15th minute. Shortly thereafter Luis Argudo would tie the game with help of Gyasi Zardes. The Crew struggled to maintain possession against NYRB pressured attacks but would counter to take the lead just 39 seconds into the second half.
Despite having the ball for 59.8% of the game the Red Bulls were outshot 20-14 in a 3-2 loss.
Chicago Fire VS DC United Recap
DC United came into Chicago in need of a win from a struggling Chicago Fire team but the match would end in a draw. DC held on to the ball 53.1% of possession time but were outshot 3-1 in on-target attempts. The outcome of this match is frustrating for both teams as they continue to try and climb back into the playoff talks. DC United is now 2-3-7 over their last 12 MLS matches, while Chicago is 1-6-5 over the same amount of matches.
FC Dallas VS Real Salt Lake Recap
Real Salt Lake came into this match looking to pass up FC Dallas in the standings but must settle for a draw. Goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez faced 17 shots and made five saves for FC Dallas. Real Salt Lake poured on the pressure forcing Gonzalez to make four saves in the first 45 minutes of play. The second half saw FC Dallas pick up the slack on offense forcing Nick Rimando to make a pair of saves.
With the draw and the Dynamo’s loss to Seattle both FC Dallas and Salt Lake remain in the last two playoff spots in the Western Conference.
Houston VS Seattle Recap
Seattle Sounders scored an early second half goal at the hands of Jordan Morris in the 59th minute. A.J. DeLaGarza attempted to get into position to head the ball away but jumped too early and Morris was able to capitalize for the lone goal of the evening.
The Sounders have now won for the third time in their last four games and have rebounded from their loss to Portland last Sunday. The Dynamo were shut out for the sixth time this year.
Minnesota VS Vancouver Recap
Minnesota United FC managed to extend their unbeaten streak to six games in a tie with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Untited dominated by taking 16 shots to Vancouver’s eight. Minnesota almost took the lead in the 73rd minute but Mason Toye‘s kick sailed high over the crossbar despite being just in from of the goal. In the third minute of stoppage time Minnesota’s Darwin Quintero took a shot but was saved by goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.
Montreal VS Philadelphia Recap
Less than five minutes into the match, Lassi Lappalainen would score the first goal via a pass from Zachary Brault-Guillard. Lappalainen is on loan from Bologna of the top-level Serie A in Italy. Orji Okwonkwo would score the second goal for Montreal in the 36th minute. Lappalainen then scored his second goal on the night just 17 seconds into the half. Okwonkwo scored again in the 66th minute to cap off a 4-0 win over first place Philadelphia Union.
Toronto VS Cincinnati Recap
Toronto controlled much of the play in the first half which resulted in a header by Nick DeLeon in the 16th minute. In the 50th minute Jozy Altidore would score a goal via a well placed shot outside of the box. Altidore has now scored in four consecutive matches. Emmanuel Ledesma of would score Cincinnati’s only goal in the 58th minute.
San Jose VS Colorado Recap
San Jose Quakes extend their win streak against the lowely Colorado Rapids. the Quakes out shot the rapids 17-11 and controlled the ball 66% of play time. A total of 34 fouls would be committed and 6 yellow cards shown before the match was over. Lalas Abubakar from the Rapids would start the scoring by scoring a goal on his own team. Valeri Qazaishvili and Shea Salinas would score the other two goals for San Jose and Diego Rubio would score the loan goal for Colorado.
Portland VS LA Galaxy Recap
In the last game of the week Portland Timbers shut out the LA Galaxy 4-0. Portland would open the scoring with a pair of goals by Cristhian Paredes and Diego Valeri in the latter half of the first. Paredes would score another goal in the 81st minute of play. LA Galaxy’s frustration boiled over when Efrain Alvarez was sent off the field with a red card for hitting in the back with a kicked ball. Down to 10 men, the Galaxy couldn’t defend Jeremy Ebobisse‘s header into the net.
Portland is unbeaten in six straight matches and has moved into the last playoff spot in the Western Conference behind Real Salt Lake.
MLS play will resume Saturday August 3rd after the all stars return from the Wednesday match against Atletico Madrid.
