Listen no one in their right mind thinks that Nathan Peterman will take the starting job away from Derek Carr, but could Jon Gruden’s praise of Peterman spell the end for Carr?
Could Peterman Spell The End For Derek Carr?
Since the end of last season, rumors spread about how Carr’s time in Oakland is winding down. And it’s not because of the impending move to Las Vegas. Carr and Gruden allegedly have a rocky relationship, and many believe that Carr hasn’t lived up to his deal.
With about $8 million in dead cap following the 2019 season, Carr might be one of the most expendable starting quarterbacks based on the cap numbers.
Gruden on Peterman
During Tuesday’s practice Gruden had this to say about the former Buffalo Bills starting quarterback.
“This Nate Peterman is growing on me. He’s athletic. I know he’s got some nightmare performances in the NFL, but when you watch the film, you can see why: It’s not all his fault. But he’s got some talent. He’s got some athleticism. He has some experience. He was an Opening Day starter for the Buffalo Bills last year. I take that very serious. He’s smart. He’s done a good job. He’s been consistent, and I think he’s starting to get his confidence back. We all need that.”
Jon Gruden
That’s a glowing endorsement for a guy is supposed to be the backup quarterback. As much as we joke at the expense of Gruden, he isn’t the dummy we depict him to be. Could this be Gruden sending a message to his quarterback? Could Gruden be sending a message to the rest of the league that Carr is available for the right price? Or is Gruden just trying to replace the lost confidence of his backup quarterback? Only one man knows, and we’ve nicknamed him after a killer doll.
