NBA History: Top Three All-Time Guards

There is always on-going debates about who the best guard is in NBA history. Everyone has their own opinion but these three guards are leading the consensus. These three players are Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Stephen Curry.

Guard 1: Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan was a shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards. The man not only did it all as a player but he also owners the Charlotte Hornets.

Michael Jordan is the only player to three peat twice in the NBA championships. He helped the Bulls win three times from 1991-1993 and again from 1996-1998. In addition to the six rings he also was NBA finals MVP all six times. He won the NBA most valuable player award five times and made it to 14 NBA all-star games.

Michael Jordan had many individual accolades. He was a ten time NBA scoring champion. This man is considered to be the greatest defensive guard ever. He was on the NBA defensive first time nine times and was the NBA steals leader three times.

The Hall of Famer finished his career with 32,292 points, 6,672 rebounds, and 5,633 in assists. That makes him the fifth highest scorer in history at this time.

Guard 2: Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson is the most innovative point guards ever.

Magic Johnson played for the Los Angeles Lakers as their point guard from 1979-1991 and came back in 1996. Like Michael Jordan he too had many team accomplishments. He helped with Lakers five NBA final championships. He was the NBA finals MVP three of the five times. Added to that Magic also was NBA most valuable player three times and went to the all-star game twelve times. He was on the NBA all first team nine times and was the leader in assists four times. Magic also led the league in steals twice.

Magic Johnson finished his career with 17,707 points. He also collected 6,559 rebounds and 10,141 assists. He is ranked fifth all time in assists with Paul George being less than 1000 assist away from reaching him.

Guard 3: Steph Curry

Stephen Curry currently plays starting point guard for the Golden State Warriors. He has been dominating the league at his position since 2009. Currently he has three NBA championships and two NBA most valuable player awards. In the past six seasons Curry made it to the All-star game. He was the NBA scoring champion and the steals champion in 2016. Also toward his accolades he is a member of the 50-40-90 club in 2016. This means he hit 50 percent in field goals, 40 percent from the three point arch, and 90 percent at the free throw line.

The ability that Curry possesses that the others don’t have is the unbelievable range from the three point arch. In the 2012-2013 season he set a NBA record making 272 three point shots. In 2015 he surpassed his own record scoring 286 three point shots. Then he demolished the record in 2016 with 402 three point shots made. He is the best pure three point shooter in NBA history.


All three players are best in their own unique way. There are solid claims made that Kobe Bryant can be in the same conversation but the three remain the best. Both Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Stephen Curry can take claim to being the best guard ever. The G.O.A.T. is one of these three and it will be revealed when all three superstars are retired.
