Boston Bruins Re-sign McAvoy and Carlo

The Boston Bruins have re-signed defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo. Following Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins’ cap space, actually the LACK of cap space, was the cause of major angst among Bruins fans. With only a tad less than $9 million average annual value (AAV) cap available to sign both McAvoy and Carlo, as well as needing to fill a few holes on wings, the Bruins’ General Manager, Don Sweeney, had to work some of his GM of the Year magic. And magical it is. After missing the first few days of camp, BOTH McAvoy and Carlo are back on the ice with their teammates. McAvoy is signed through the 2021-22 season, and Carlo through the 2020-21 season.

Charlie McAvoy is a 21 year old, 6"0", 207 pound, right shot defenseman. He was drafted 14th overall in the 2016 entry draft. In his first 2 seasons, McAvoy has been sidelined by a freak medical issue, a heart dysrhythmia-since resolved, and has had concussion issues. In the 2017-18 season McAvoy played only 63 games. That number fell to 54 games played in 2018-19.

McAvoy signed a 3 year / $14,700,000 contract with the Bruins, including a $3,500,000 signing bonus, $14,700,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $4,900,000. In 2019-20, McAvoy will earn a base salary of $1,200,000 and a signing bonus of $2,500,000, while carrying a cap hit of $4,900,000. In 2020-21, McAvoy will have a base of $7,300,00, while carrying a cap hit of $4,900,000

Brandon Carlo is a 22 year old, 6"5", 212 pound, right shot defenseman. Carlo was drafted in the second round of the 2015 entry draft, #37 overall. In the 2016-17 season, as a first-year Bruin, Carlo skated in ALL 82 regular season games, only to be concussed by Alexander Ovechkin in the last regular season game, prior to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the Bruins" 2017-18 Stanley Cup Playoff run, Carlo was sidelined again, this time for a fractured left ankle.

The Carlo Numbers

Carlo signed a 2 year / $5,700,000 contract with the Boston Bruins, including $5,700,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $2,850,000. In 2019-20, Carlo will earn a base salary of $2,200,000, while carrying a cap hit of $2,850,000.

The Good News

The Bruins sign McAvoy and Carlo!

When their current contracts expire, both McAvoy and Carlo will still be Restricted Free Agents, but with arbitration rights. At term, the Bruins will have several big money, cap-crunchers coming off the books:

Tuukka Rask $7 million/AAV, David Backes $6 million/AAV, David Krejci $7 million/AAV, as well as Dennis Seidenberg‘s buyout at $1.16 million/AAV and Matt Belesky‘s retained salary at $1.9 million/AAV.

Granted, there are some big contracts in the Bruins" future, Torey Krug for one, but Sweeney seems to have a good handle on the Bruins cap issues.
