Yu Darvish and his Phenomenal Second Half

This season has been a wild roller coaster for the season for Cubs fans. The bullpen has caused headaches all season and most recently during the sweep handed to the Cubs by the Cardinals. However, if there is any positive that came from this season, the turn around of Yu Darvish has been outstanding. He has been one of the highlights of the season and his record does not do justice to him. Darvish has more pitch types then one can count, and his strikeout to walks ratio is insane. Hendricks was phenomenal as always but in the second half of the season, Darvish was must watch.

The Record Lies

You Darvish has been better than his 6-8 record. This record should not be this bad and there are a few games to point to as to what happened. On May 31st against the Cardinals, the Cubs lost 2-1. Darvish went 6 IP, 3BB, 6 SO, 1 ER and ended up with a no decision. On June 5th against Colorado, he went 5.1 IP 2 ER, 5 SO and again received a no decision. The Cubs ended up winning this game with the final score being 9-8.

Darvish had a few other good starts that should have given him a better record. Back on July 12th against the Pirates, he went 6IP, 0 ER, 8 SO and again received a no decision. The Cubs would win a close 4-3 game. July 30th against St. Louis saw Darvish work 6 innings with 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO. He would receive a tough luck loss, as the Cubs dropped the game 2-1. On August 15th against the Phillies, Darvish goes 7 IP, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 SO, and again received a no decision. You get the point. Darvish was failed multiple times by the bullpen and the offense. He has pitched better than that 6-8 record.

Darvish and the Second Half

His pitching has been phenomenal in the 2nd half of the season. Since July 3rd, Darvish has lowered his 5.01 ERA to a 3.98 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio has been even more impressive. Darvish is the only pitcher to have 8 SO and 0 BB in five consecutive games. Since July 3rd, Darvish has averaged nearly 9 strikeouts per game. Darvish has only given up only 7 walks in the same time span. His turn around has been something to watch.

Darvish has held opponents to a 2.95 ERA since a July 3rd. That ranks 11th in the entirety of MLB. He is also tied for 6th in strikeouts in that span. His K/9 of 12.63 ranks 4th in the league. Darvish’s FIP of 3.06 backs up his ERA since July 3rd. Darvish has been outstanding and the hope is he can carry it into next year.

Final Thoughts on Yu Darvish

This season has not been kind to the Cubs. They will be missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. Between bad luck when it came to injuries to flat out not performing when they need to, this season hasn’t gone the way the Cubs wanted. However, Darvish has been a light in the dark for Cub fans. Watching Yu Darvish navigate his 10 pitch arsenal is something to behold, especially this season. He has found health and a command of his pitches to bring about a successful second half. Cubs fans everywhere are hoping that this continues.
