Introduction

ONE Championship century is a two-part event that will commemorate the organisation’s hundredth show. The event will take place in Tokyo, Japan, on the 13th of October 2019. ONE Championship century will feature 28 martial arts champions and seven title fights.

Aung La Nsang vs Brandon Vera

Vera and Nsang holding their titles

Two-weight world champion and Luke Rockhold’s training partner, Aung La Nsang (25-10) will defend his belt against former UFC heavyweight and current ONE Championship heavyweight champion Brandon Vera (16-7).

Nsang will come into the fight looking to retain his status as a two-weight world champion, whilst simultaneously extending his current win-streak to seven. Five of Nsang’s last six wins have been stoppages. Four of these have come by the way of knockout and one via guillotine choke.

Vera, on the other hand, will come into the fight on the back of his heavyweight title defence against Mauro Cerilli (13-3), which ended with a vicious knockout just 1:04 into the fight at Conquest of Champions. The victory over Cerilli extended Vera’s winning streak to four straight wins in ONE Championship.

This is a fight that could end at any minute with both fighters possessing fight-ending power. This power has been highlighted recently with both fighters coming into this main event on impressive finishing streaks. If this fight does manage to go late though Nsang should have the advantage because Vera needs to cut extra weight to make 205 pounds.

My Pick

Aung La Nsang via 5th round submission. There are too many what-ifs in this fight for me too be able to confidently choose either fighter. Although, most of my questions come around Vera being required to cut the extra weight. This could eat into both his power and stamina. I believe that Vera is likely to gas late in the fight and Nsang will take advantage of this winning via submission, living up to his nickname of the Burmese python.

Shinya Aoki vs Honorino Banario

The Japanese legend and grappling expert Shinya Aoki (43-9) will face returning Philipino sensation Honorio Banarino (14-9) in the co-main event of the evening at ONE Championship century part 2.

Aoki will be hoping to return to winning ways at ONE Championship century part 2, after losing his title via a second-round knockout to Christian Lee (12-3) in his last outing. Before losing in his title fight against Lee, Aoki accumulated a four-fight win streak. The most notable of these victories being when he managed to dethrone Eduard Folayang (21-8) after just 2:34 with an arm and triangle choke, during Folayang’s first attempted defence.

Banario will also be hoping to return to winning ways at ONE Championship century part 2 when he faces Aoki. Banario is coming into the bout on a two-fight losing streak. Those losses have come against, the undefeated American, Lowen Tynanes (10-0), via first-round TKO, and Dae Sung Park (10-2), via decision.

My pick

Aoki via 2nd round submission. Aoki is a legend in MMA and although I expect Banarino to put up a decent fight, I expect Aoki’s grappling will ultimately prove to be too much for Banarino to handle.
