The NFL has reached Week 7 of the 2019 season. Through the first six weeks, we have seen our fair share of upsets and surprising storylines. Entering Week 7 let us look at some headlines and storylines of the season thus far.
New Orleans Saints
Week 2 saw a rematch of the 2018 NFC Championship game. The New Orleans Saints travelled out west to take on the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams won the game 27-9. In addition to the loss, the Saints lost their futur Hall of Fame quarterback, Drew Brees. The Saints diagnosed Brees with a torn ligament in his right thumb. Brees had surgery and could return in 2 weeks.
Teddy Bridgewater has stepped in for Brees and has led the Saints to four straight wins. Bridgewater has thrown for 1,089 yards and 7 touchdowns. The defense has been equally as good. With the offense struggling, the defense took it upon themselves to shut down their opponents. The Saints lead the NFC South and stand in good positioning to stay at the top. When Brees returns, can the Saints continue to find ways to win week in and week out?
Week two brought problems for the Carolina Panthers too. The Buccaneers upset the Panthers on Thursday Night Football. Carolina faced a 4th and 1 from the 2-yard line. The Panthers opted to run Christian McCaffery and the Buccaneers stopped him short of the first down sealing the win. After the game, the Panthers determined their franchise quarterback Cam Newton sustained a foot injury. Carolina coach Ron Rivera chose to start back up quarterback Kyle Allen in their week 3 matchup.
Like Bridgewater, Allen has led the Panthers to 4 straight wins. Allen has thrown for 901 yards and 7 touchdowns. The Panthers defense has played better during their four-game winning streak. The Panthers sit in second place in the NFC South behind the Saints. The two rivals play in week 12 and week 17. Could we see the return of Cam Newton? It seems the Panthers offense is in rhythm and Kyle Allen might have been the answer. Only time will tell if Allen can continue to lead this team to successful wins.
NFL surprises through week 6
There are three teams throughout the NFL that started off fast but have hit a speed bump in recent weeks. The Cowboys, Rams, and Chiefs all began the year undefeated. Since then, the teams have combined to go 0-8. The Cowboys and Rams both started 3-0 and are now 3-3. The Chiefs began 4-0 but have lost their last 2 games, both at home. All three teams have explosive offenses that are struggling to find their identity. Additionally, these teams also have defenses that have a lot of issues as we enter week 7.
If you are going to push the panic button on a team, I would push it on the Rams. The Rams are playing in a tough division with San Francisco and Seattle ahead of them. If the Rams want any shot of making the postseason, they must pick it up quick. The Cowboys and Chiefs sit atop their respective divisions. The Cowboys are in a 1st place tie and the Chiefs sit 1 game ahead. The Chiefs have a better offense than the Cowboys and play in a weaker division. Therefore the Chiefs stand a better chance in turning the season around. All three of these teams can still make the playoffs and I would not count either one of them out.
NFL Week 7 preview
2019 NFL week 7 begins with Thursday Night Football featuring the Chiefs travelling to Denver to play the Broncos. The Chiefs should be able to get back on the winning path even with the Broncos coming off a win against the Titans. We move to the Noon block on Sunday and find the Minnesota Vikings travelling to Detroit to play the Lions in a pivotal NFC North matchup. This is a toss-up and can go either way.
Let us travel to Indianapolis to find the Houston Texans playing their AFC South rival Colts. This is for 1st place in the division. The Texans with a win would lead by 2 games while a Colts win would put them in 1st via the head-to-head tiebreaker. These three games could come down to the wire. The winner of these games will earn the victory and put themselves in a better position going forward.
NFL Week 7 preview (continued)
America’s Game of the Week comes to you from Soldier Field in Chicago as the Bears host the Saints. This could be a defensive struggle and if the Bears win could be a turning point in their season. The other game of the week features the Baltimore Ravens and the Seattle Seahawks. Two dual-threat quarterbacks, two average defenses, this could be a shootout of epic proportion. Sunday Night Football will be for the NFC East lead as the Philadelphia Eagles play the Dallas Cowboys. Both teams are coming off a loss and want to have that key tiebreaker in their favor.
Week 7 concludes on Monday Night Football inside the AFC East as Tom Brady’s New England Patriots take on Sam Darnold’s New York Jets. The Jets are coming off an upset win against the Cowboys, while the Patriots continue to show their dominance. Can David slay Goliath and shake up the AFC East?
It is always said that the NFL is a week-to-week league. You cannot take any opponent lightly. Be on the lookout this week for your fair share of upsets and surprises. The journey to the Super Bowl continues.
