With ONE Championship looking to expand their live shows into America in 2020, there is no better matchup to make than Christain Lee (13-3) vs Eddie Alvarez (30-7).
Current ONE Championship Lightweight world champion Lee impressed everyone in his last bout with a dominant decision win over Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev (8-2).
Lee stepped up on only two weeks notice to face Arslanaliev at ONE Championship century part one and went on to claim the ONE Championship lightweight world Grand Prix title.
Lee has been vocal about his desire to be on ONE Championship’s first card held in America and after his win over Arslanaliev, he has the perfect opponent in mind.
That opponent is none other than former UFC and Bellator lightweight world champion Eddie Alvarez.
In an interview with ONE Championship Lee stated: ” I’d love to see a show in New York City against Eddie Alvarez or even in Hawaii”.
Lee went on to say “I think that the fans would be very happy to see a match with Eddie Alvarez in the US, and I would love to be the first person to bring ONE Championship to the United States, so I think that could be next”.
Alvarez currently holds a record of 1-1 in ONE Championship. Alvarez, lost in his debut against Timofey Nastyukhin (13-4), via a first-round TKO, during the first round of the lightweight Grand Prix.
However, Alvarez would get a second chance in the Grand Prix against Eduard Folayang (21-8) after Nastyukhin suffered an injury. Alvarez took full advantage of this opportunity, submitting the former lightweight champion in the first round, to earn his place in the Grand Prix final.
Alvarez would, unfortunately, suffer the same fate as Nastyukhin when he was forced to withdraw from the bout against Arslanaliev with an injury. This led to Lee taking the fight on short notice and winning the ONE Championship lightweight Grand Prix.
Alvarez was quick to take to Twitter after the fight to both, simultaneously, congratulate and challenge Lee.
Why Lee vs Alvarez is the perfect matchup
Some may argue that Alvarez’s record of 1-1 in ONE Championship does not warrant a title shot, but it is hard to see ONE Championship not sanctioning the matchup for two main reasons.
The first reason being that both fighters have very cleary and publicly stated they want to face each other next. When any two fighters publicly state they want to face each other it is hard for an organisation to say no. Definitely when the two fighters in question are as high profile as Lee and Alvarez
The second reason being that Alvarez is a huge name worldwide and well known in the US. Alvarez has won titles in the two biggest US organisations, the UFC and Bellator. So, matching him up with Lee for a championship bout is guaranteed to draw in fans.
With both fighters wanting to face each other just as ONE Championship is looking to break into the American market, the timing could not be any better for the organisation. Lee vs Alvarez is, without a doubt, the perfect matchup for ONE Championship to successfully break into the US market.
