The 2019-20 season is almost upon us, but the news heard around college basketball is from the recruiting class of 2020. The ACC is in the center of the spotlight. When you listen to people talk about the ACC, you look to teams like Duke, North Carolina, Louisville and Virginia, and their respective coaches, Coach K, Roy Williams, Chris Mack, and Tony Bennett.
Overview
Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams are both considered to be some of the best coaches to coach the game at this level, and recruiting is a big part of that ranking. Both Duke and North Carolina are considered two of the Blue Bloods and are always expected to land top players each year. For the 2020 class, it is looking like it will be something special for the top teams in the ACC. Let’s take a deep dive into the 2020 class for each team as it stands right now.
Duke Blue Devils:
2020 recruiting class- Five commits: Three 5-star, Two 4-star
Players
5-star SF Jalen Johnson- 6-8, 215 lbs
5-star PG Jeremy Roach- 6-2, 180 lbs
5-star CG DJ Steward- 6-3, 165
4-star PF Henry Coleman- 6-6, 210 lbs
4-star PF Jaemyn Brakefield- 6-8, 210 lbs
Analysis
Having a class like this coming to Duke shouldn’t surprise anyone, but what can they do with this much talent? The last championship that Duke has won was in 2015, and since then, Duke has only made it to the Elite Eight twice in the previous four years. Last year was a disappointing one for the Blue Devils, only reaching the Elite Eight and losing to Michigan St. But they could have easily lost in the second round after only winning by a combined three points in the round of 32 and the Sweet Sixteen. Duke will look to improve on this with this class coming in 2020.
North Carolina Tar Heels:
2020 recruiting class- Four commits: Three 5-star, One 4-star
Players
5-star C Walker Kessler- 7-0, 245 lbs
5-star C Day’Ron Sharpe- 6-10, 246 lbs
5-star PG Caleb Love- 6-3, 170 lbs
4-star CG R.J Davis- 5-11, 164 lbs
Analysis
North Carolina has had an impressive start to the 2020 class with more to come because Coach Roy Williams is not done. He has offers to 5-star Cade Cunningham, Bryce Thompson, Greg Brown, and Ziaire Williams. He also has offers to a handful of 4-star recruits. This class could be very, very scary if all goes well for Roy and the Heels.
Virginia Cavaliers:
2020 recruiting class- Three commits: Three 4-star
Players
4-star SF Jabri Abdur-Rahim- 6-5, 185 lbs
4-star PG Reece Beekman- 6-2, 160 lbs
4-star SG Carson McCorkle- 6-3, 170 lbs
Analysis
Virginia had an excellent start to 2020 with three talented players coming in, two of which committed this past summer. It looks like the hunt in 2020 has concluded for Bennett and the Cavaliers. As of now, he has a top-three class in the ACC. They are also inside the top five at the number four spot overall in college basketball.
Louisville Cardinals:
2020 recruiting class- Two commits- Two 4-stars
Players
4-star SG Jay Scrubb- 6-6, 220 lbs
4-star SF D’Andre Davis- 6-5, 170 lbs
Analysis
Louisville only has two captures as of now, and one that might not even stick. They also had eyes on the 2021 CG, Devin Askew. He committed to Kentucky just days ago, and he might be reclassifying. Another prospect they were eyeing on was big man Gethro Muscadin. It didn’t end the way Louisville wanted it to either. He decided to go to Kansas. This is what Head Coach Chris Mack had to say about the 2020 class, “We don’t worry about the ones that we miss on, because that happens every recruiting cycle.” Louisville still has some light as wing player, D’Andre Davis just committed to the Cardinals this past weekend. They have also offered 4-star PF JJ Traynor, who is set to make his decision sometime in the next month. 2020 will be a big year recruiting wise after players leave after this season.
Overall, the top of the ACC is looking good so far. North Carolina is aiming to have one of the best recruiting classes in some time for them. Virginia has three solid players for themselves, but it looks like they are done and now focused on 2021. Louisville will be the school to keep an eye on. They have lost a couple of people, but they still have prospects on their radar.
