UFC Singapore took place on October 26th featuring welterweights Ben Askren and Demian Maia. In the summer, Askren fought Jorge Masvidal where he lost for the first time in his career. A loss which wrote Masvidal in the record books with the fastest knockout in UFC history.
Maia on the other hand, won two fights in a row coming into Fight Night 162. He rode the hot streak and finished Askren via 3rd round submission. As for Maia and his future, he should continue being booked for top welterweight bouts. However, for Ben, it’s a cloudy future.
The 35 year old Askren has his career up in the air at the moment. And just as a lot of fighters say, you have to go home and think about things. Askren said just that as he reflected across what was a “busy and fantastic” year.
Ben Askren still shows some promise as he fought pretty well in the first two rounds of the fight. He added that he believed he won the rounds and made one mistake coming into the 3rd round. Askren stated that he was “overconfident” against the “best grappler in the division, possibly in MMA ever.”
Askren carries a positive outlook from his Singapore bout and still has some left in the tank many believe. The cloudy and sort of unforeseen future starts now and many fans will be waiting with how Ben Askren plays this out.
