Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant tweeted that he is “feeling good” and wants to return to football. It is very likely that the three-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro can help a team looking to make a deep playoff push. Bryant is now 31 years old and coming off an Achilles injury that he suffered last season, just days after signing with the New Orleans Saints. So what contending teams may bring on the services of the former All-Pro? While many teams could use him, there are five in particular that could thrive with Bryant in their offense.
1. New Orleans Saints
Starting off with an obvious one. The Saints reportedly looked to upgrade the wide receiver position at the NFL Trade Deadline. Unfortunately like many other teams, they were not able to. While Bryant had a rather short stay in New Orleans last season due to injury, he has stated that he would like to go back there, and will even give the Saints “first dibs” when he starts calling teams here in the next couple of weeks. Bryant will give the Saints the opportunity to sign him first because he feels like he “owes them one”. This seems like the perfect match. The Saints are looking for help at wide receiver and Bryant wants to help the team that gave him a chance last year. Now we will just have to wait and see if Sean Payton wants to bring Bryant back to contribute.
“I’ll make sure I call the Saints first, because I owe them”
2. Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have had a slower start to the season than they would have liked. Carson Wentz has been putting up good numbers but his receiver core has had a total of 13 dropped passes already this season. The Eagles very recently signed Jordan Matthews, making it his third stay with the team. Adding Dez Bryant to a drop happy receiving core could help fix some issues within the offense. Carson Wentz would now have a reliable target. This signing may be just enough to spring the Eagles back up into Super Bowl contention.
3. Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers to Dez Bryant. It just seems like a match made in heaven. The Packers are another one of those contending teams in dire need of a receiver. For the past three weeks, Green Bay wideouts have a total of 22 catches for 218 yards and zero touchdowns, which includes Davante Adams. Giving Aaron Rodgers a deep threat like Dez Bryant could be one of the most explosive duos in the league. Big play after big play. Not only that, but Bryant could help take some of the pressure off of Davante Adams. This pairing at wide receiver would also open up the running game even more for Aaron Jones, who is already having a magnificent season.
This fit would allow Dez to get plenty of targets, all while not being the number one target. A couple of months ago on ESPN’s “NFL Live”, Josina Anderson reported that there are indeed teams interested in Dez Bryant, and the Packers are among the teams that he would like to play for.
Bryant has the Green Bay Packers among his top landing spots, as well as New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers.
Conflicting with this report, Bryant has been on record stating that “there is too much history” between him and the Packers (from his Cowboy days) and there is no chance that he signs there. But is he just saying that? Only time will tell.
4. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are currently sitting on a 5-4 record, and second in the NFC South trailing only the New Orleans Saints. Carolina already has one deadly offensive weapon in Christian McCaffrey, who is making a strong case to win league MVP. The Panthers also have a very surprising second-year quarterback in Kyle Allen. This team is good enough to make a playoff push. Finding another receiver might be atop their biggest needs, but they would most definitely benefit from it. If the Panthers want to give their rookie quarterback a very good receiving target, then Dez Bryant is the way to go at this point in the season. By making this move, Carolina could have an offensive trio of Kyle Allen, Christian McCaffrey, and Dez Bryant. This trio would be able to score on any defense. This also frees up young receivers Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore a lot more often.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers
After starting the season horribly, the Steelers have completely turned it around, going on a four-game winning streak and shooting themselves back up into playoff contention. It seems unlikely that they will be able to catch up to the red-hot Baltimore Ravens and win the division, however they can realistically secure a wildcard spot. Pairing Dez Bryant with star receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster would make a deadly combo at the wideout position. This move could open up the possibility to bring in Bryant. After losing Antonio Brown this past off-season, there has been a clear gap in the Steelers wide receiver depth chart, and Dez can help fix that. Overall, Dez has been working on a comeback and this match seems like a good fit for the former All-Pro
