Wisconsin vs Marquette- Bucky regains bragging rights

The match-up between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Marquette Golden Eagles is always one the fans of these teams look forward to. This heated rivalry dates all the way back to 1917, and Wisconsin holds a 68-58 record, adding a win today. The two squads have split the last 10 games, an even 5 wins a piece. Let’s get into the action today after the Badgers won 77-61

Badgers containing Markus Howard

Wisconsin knew coming into the game that they would have to slow down the stud guard somewhat. The first half went along, and Markus had 16 first half points. The Badgers lead by five at the break, even with those 16 points given up to Howard. That is because no one on Marquette had more than 6 points, giving credit to the team defense off of Howard.

The bigger story was in the second half when the Badgers started to pull away. Coming out of the locker room, Howard knew he needed to keep scoring and looking for ways to help his team, but the red and white didn’t budge. Howard went 0-9 in the second half from the field. This was a huge key.

The Wisconsin offense

Coming off of a win against Eastern Illinois, and three good games from Ford, Reuvers and King, it would have to continue against a good Marquette team. The Badgers pushed the pace a little in the first half, which is surprising, but cool to see if you are a UW fan. SIX players were in double figures. Reuvers had 10, Ford had 12, Trice had 10, Davison had 15, and King had 10. The difference player was the Wisconsin’s lone senior.

Brevin Pritzl’s impact

The lone senior stepped up in a big way this afternoon, notching his first career double double. He finished the game with 15 points, and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes. He was all over the floor, snatching offensive rebounds and knocking down three’s in the same possession.

Wisconsin looked like a really dangerous team today. They defended really well and knocked down the open shots. No one wants to go down low and meet up with Ruevers, who in my opinion is an elite shot blocker, and now with learning from Happ, can turn into an elite scorer. He has all of the weapons. Great win for this Badgers squad. ON WISCONSIN!
