Overtime Heroics Power Rankings for the college basketball season are back after a couple weeks of play have concluded. The Champions Classic could have been better quality basketball, but it is early. Teams also have been upset, including some of the top teams in the pre-season rankings. So how much has Overtime Heroics adjusted their power rankings through 2 weeks? I will give you a hint: quite a bit.
1.Duke Blue Devils (4-0) Last Week 3
There may be a little bias here, but Duke Blue Devils are an easy number one for us. They opened up their season knocking off the Kansas Jayhawks 68-66 in the Champions Classic. They had four players in double figures, which shows they can beat you with multiple guys. Since then, they blew out three teams that they should, while other top teams have faltered. This team should remain undefeated until they meet the Michigan State Spartans the opening week of December.
2. Michigan State Spartans (3-1) Last Week 1
Outside of Duke, the rest of the top four have lost a game. Michigan State lost opening night to Kentucky by seven points, which shocked many. Cassius Winston was the only double-digit scorer, and Michigan State turned it over six more times. This team rebounded though and won their next 3 games, including beating ranked team Seton Hall. Condolences to Cassius on the loss of his brother, glad to see him back and playing well.
3. Louisville (4-0) Last Week 5
Lousiville may not be getting all the attention in the ACC, but they will give Duke trouble all year. They opened with a win against ACC rival Miami and have coasted ever since. Jordan Nwora had 23 points and 12 rebounds against Miami. He looks like the front runner for ACC Player of the Year. A 23 point and two 29 point wins have the Cardinals undefeated two weeks in. Circle December 3rd on the calendar as they meet Michigan at home in their first real test.
4.Kentucky (3-1) Last Week 4
The Wildcats could be lower, but tough to do when they knocked off Michigan State to open the season. Kentucky is a young team that likely won’t peak until March. It happens every year for John Calipari so I expect Kentucky to fall even further. They will struggle before getting better, but they currently deserve this ranking for a big win. Knocking off the number one team cannot be ignored, even with a shameful loss to Evansville.
5. Maryland (3-0) Last Week 8
Maryland just sneaks into the top five with other contenders losing games. Don’t get me wrong, Maryland has played a bunch of nobodies so far. That said, they have dominated those nobodies. They have scored over 70 points in all three games and have been impressive defensively as well. Their first ranked opponent is not until December 19th versus Seton Hall, so they will coast until then. Overtime Heroics cannot wait for Maryland versus Seton Hall.
6. Kansas (2-1) Last Week 2
Tough opening couple of weeks in Jayhawk country. Yes it is early in the year, but 28 turnovers against Duke in the opener is jaw-dropping. That is turning it over every minute and a half. Devin Dotson had a strong outing versus UNC Greensboro with 22-8-6. They also blew out Monmouth but I will struggle to rank them higher until they play another quality team. That will come December 7th against #23 Colorado and Kansas better be ready.
7. Gonzaga (4-0) Last Week 6
Mark Few has another talented Gonzaga team on his hands. They have played four games and all of them were blowouts. Victories of 29, 50, 31 and 30 is huge, regardless of who you are playing. The only noteworthy program they beat was Texas A&M by 30, but you can’t control your schedule. They hit the toughest stretch of their schedule in a couple weeks. They play 3 ranked teams in a row, including North Carolina and Arizona. For now enjoy the easy wins Bulldog fans.
8.Virginia (3-0) Last Week 8
Pretty shocked to see Virginia get a #1 vote in the AP Top 25, but they have been solid. They opened in a tough matchup at Syracuse where they won by 14. What was astonishing was holding them to 34 points. Virginia only gave up 34 and 42 points in their next two, which shows scoring will be tough. We will be keeping an eye on whether they can keep this defending up. December 8th against Cole Anthony and North Carolina will be very telling.
9.North Carolina (3-0) Last Week 10
We are not being North Carolina haters here, they just haven’t shown a lot yet. Cole Anthony was stellar in his debut against Notre Dame dropping 34 points. They are undefeated, but have yet to hold a team under 60 points all year. The question all season for the Tar Heels will be whether he has a supporting cast. If not, they could be just a one man show in the ACC.
10. Oregon (4-0) Last Week 16
Quite the impressive start for the Ducks to open the year. While Fresno and Boise State aren’t exactly basketball powerhouses Memphis this year is. Even with James Wiseman the Ducks were able to pull off an eight point victory. Oregon will have another tough test against #13 Seton Hall on November 27th. A victory in that matchup could mean another significant jump in our rankings.
11. Texas Tech (3-0) Last Week 12
Texas Tech held strong the first two weeks of the season. The Red Raiders schedule has been very weak, but they are still winning comfortably. Wins by 25, 35 and 29 points show they have been on cruise control. They will need to continue to refine their skills before they meet #2 Louisville in a few short weeks.
12. Ohio State (4-0) Last Week 20
While other teams have had an easy schedule Ohio State has not. They opened with an eight point win against the Cincinnati Bearcats. They also dominated a strong Villanova team by 25 points. We expect Ohio State to dominate the next few weeks before meeting North Carolina in the start of December. If they can defeat the Tar Heels we may see the Buckeyes in Overtime Heroics top 10.
13. Arizona (4-0) Last Week 14
Nico Mannion has not impressed as much as we thought he would. He only scored nine points versus a weak Northern Arizona squad, but they still won easily. The next 3 games Mannion had 23, 6 and 15 point outings, which shows he is very hot and cold. The team is winning, but Mannion will need to be more consistent. The Wildcats will not go far if he doesn’t and they will also drop down the power rankings list.
14. Seton Hall Last Week 15
The only real challenger to Villanova in the Big East has passed them in our rankings. Seton Hall opened with two victories before a tough contest with Michigan State. They battled them down to the final possession before losing by three points. Oregon will be the next tough test on their schedule and we cannot wait to watch.
15. Utah State (5-0) Last Week 24
We stated this at the start of the year that Utah State does not have the toughest schedule. Despite their lack of competition they are rolling over these teams. Montana State kept it close with them, but the other wins were by a minimum of 27 points. We will be curious to see how they fare against LSU this week. They were are biggest climbers this week so hopefully they don’t disappoint and fall.
16. Memphis Last Week 9
The number one recruiting class took a major blow over the past couple of weeks. Apparently head coach Penny Hardaway cannot give his players money to move, shocking! While the Wiseman situation has been distracting, Memphis has been solid. They beat the teams they should with ease and kept it close with Oregon. Boogie Ellis and Precious Achiuwa will have to step up in Wiseman’s absence. If they don’t, they will fall further down the power rankings list.
17.Xavier (4-0) Last Week 19
Xavier basketball is back and well. Tough to praise them too much with wins against Jacksonville, Siena and Missouri State. What did impress us was a five point win against Missouri last week. This team, like many others, will not have tough competition until the end of December. No denying being undefeated though which is why the Musketeers are 17th.
18. Villanova (2-1) Last Week 11
I said last week that Overtime Heroics was not that high on Villanova. They proved us right with an early loss to Ohio State by 25 points. Jay Wright will learn from that loss and we expect Nova to bounce back. Their schedule is quite weak over the next month, so they will build their confidence back up. Higher confidence means a higher Overtime Heroics power rankings position.
19. Auburn (5-0) Last Week 23
This Final Four team from last season has gotten out to another hot start. Southern Alabama and Davidson are not exactly Duke or Kansas, but they held on to beat them both. The SEC will be an absolute dog fight this year. That is why it is so important they keep racking up wins now.
20. VCU (4-0) Last Week 25
VCU was the second highest climber in our power rankings with a hot start to their campaign. A tight two point win against LSU kept them in the rankings at all. It will be tough for us to rank VCU too highly. They currently have 0 ranked games on there schedule this year, which is disappointing to see. They better not lose many if they expect to win their conference and make the tournament.
21. Texas (4-0) Last Week NR
We slept on the Texas Longhorns and they have proven us wrong thus far. Our Power Rankings however have made up for it by moving Texas up to 21st. This week they meet Georgetown, who which will be their toughest game until the new year. The Longhorns could be tournament bound come March if they keep it up.
22. Colorado (3-0) Last Week NR
Colorado is another team that we slept on, but they are undefeated as well. The Pac 12 is much improved and Colorado has remained solid. They won 23 games last year and could be on their way to similar success. Wyoming, Sacramento and Loyola Marymount should bring 3 more wins. Those victories will be needed before they visit powerhouse Kansas the following game.
23.Washington (2-1) Last Week 18
This is the one team I went out on a limb for this season and they disappointed early. Losing to Tennessee by 13 was tough, but they also knocked Baylor. The game I have circled in the next couple of weeks will be when Washington goes to meet Gonzaga. As stated previous the Pac 12 is much improved. The more wins Washington can get before conference play the better.
24. Baylor (2-1) Last Week 17
The Baylor Bears just barely stayed on our list. They were just able to stay on by only losing by 3 to Washington. Their December 17th meeting with Arizona will be difficult and they need a win. With three ranked games to open up 2020 wins now are needed. Look for Baylor to continue improving as a team and perhaps climb the power rankings board.
25. Saint Mary’s (3-1) Last Week 22
Saint Mary’s loss to lowly Winthrop will be a black mark on this season. That does not mean they deserve to miss out on this list though. They lost by 2, but beat Wisconsin by 2, Long Beach State by 18 and Cal Poly by 31. Saint Mary’s strength of schedule is not high, but they will make it to the big dance regardless. They just sneak into Overtime Heroics Top 25 power rankings.
