A little bit of shootout drama and a winner by Captain Bo Horvat helped the Canucks beat the Capitals 2-1 in Washington.
It took a disallowed goal and seven rounds of the shootout for the Canucks to win in Washington on Saturday. This hockey game was highly entertaining, as the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Overtime Solves Nothing
As the game headed to a shootout, The Canucks could not connect on a powerplay in overtime. The Capitals also had a breakaway to end overtime that J.T. Miller thwarted with a check on Capitals T.J. Oshie. It was Quinn Hughes who gave his teammate a boost with a little stick shove to help make the play. Awesome!
Miller has easily been the Canucks MVP this season along with goaltender Jacob Markstrom. GM Jim Benning sent a third-round pick plus a conditional first-round pick in one of the next two years to acquire Miller during the off-season.
This angered Canucks fans and local sports media alike. Saying this trade has paid huge dividends for the Canucks so far though is an understatement.
Horvat Comes Through With a Clutch Goal
Bo Horvat scored the game winner in the seventh round of the shootout, completing Vancouver’s 2nd win on this road trip.
The Canucks either score a huge number of goals like the six they did against Nashville, or muster only 1 in games like this or in losses to the Stars earlier this week.
The Canucks scoring six goals against the Predators also likely wasn’t a good indicator of whether the Canucks were out of their slump since five were on the power play. The victory over the Capitals proves they are righting the ship.
Capitals still look like a Cup Champion and Contender
The Capitals presented a significant challenge having the best record in the NHL with 16 wins. We know all about their Stanley Cup in 2018 and easily one of the best players in the NHL in Alex Ovechkin.
Ovechkin leads the league in shots after 24 games (112), was fourth in goals (15), tied for third in power-play goals (seven) and 15th in points (25). He was held off the scoresheet in this game.
With the shootout win, The Canucks continue their challenging 6 game road trip Monday against the Flyers and Wednesday against the Penguins before wrapping up on November 30 in Edmonton. This trip has seen them fall 6-1 to the Stars and beat the Predators 5-3.
