Free Agency Preview: Cole Hamels

14-year veteran southpaw Cole Hamels is a free agent after spending the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs. Hamels has been around the league as he has played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs. This past season, Hamels finished 7-7, with a 3.81 ERA and 143 strikeouts over 142.1 IP across 27 starts.

Throughout his career, Hamels has been an All-Star four times, NLCS MVP, World Series MVP, and a World Series Champion. Whichever league Hamels has pitched in, he has been effective. He’s had over .500 on win percentage as he is 163-121 throughout his career with an ERA of 3.41. The veteran experience that Hamels brings would be great for a contending team. Hamels has already said he would take a one-year deal to play for a contender and win another ring.

Some teams that would look into Hamels could be the San Diego Padres. Hamels is from San Diego and has a connection there. The Philadelphia Phillies and Cole Hamels have a mutual interest in a reunion. He would likely accept a multi-year deal with the Phillies. A return to the Cubs is possible because, over his career, Hamels has loved Wrigley Field as he has had success there over his career. The Red Sox are interested and they’re still a contending team unless something drastic changes. Over half the league is interested in the southpaw, as he brings experience and passion to a team that will help them compete.

Regardless of where Hamels ends up, he will be on the field and be a huge part of that team as he wants to win another World Series ring before he hangs up the cleats.
