Canucks Advent Day 3: Top 25 Players Of The 2010’s

Everyday from December 1st to the 25th, I will be counting down the top 25 players of the 2010’s in this Canucks Advent Calender.

These Vancouver icons will be ranked on their statistics, impact on the city, and overall play during their time with Vancouver. Rankings will be based on the player’s Vancouver tenure during the 2010’s only, prior seasons with the team will have little impact on the rankings.

Here’s number 23!

23: Mikael Samuelsson (2009 – 2011)

Statistics: 155 GP, 49 G, 57 A, 106 PTS

Swedish winger Mikael Samuelsson only spent two years in a Canucks uniform. With that being said, he played some of the best hockey of his career in Vancouver. Samuelsson spent the majority of his Vancouver tenure on the second line where he found success. This success would be an integral part of why the Canucks would take home their first President’s Trophy in franchise history.

In his first season with the club, Samuelsson would post a career-high 30 goals with 53 points. Furthermore, this would be the highest scoring stretch during the Swede’s time in the league. As a result, Samuelsson would continue impressing in the following season with a whopping 50 point campaign. Samuelsson was sidelined during the second round of the playoffs and would not take part in any of the Stanley Cup Final games.

The Florida Panthers would acquire Samuelsson via trade only six games into the 2011-12 season. Samuelsson would finish the season for the Panthers before heading back to Detroit for his two final NHL seasons.

Even though Mikael only had two seasons to showcase his talents in Vancouver, he exceeded expectations. Samuelsson had 30 goals on arguably the greatest Vancouver team in franchise history. For these reasons, Mikael Samuelsson has earned the number 23 spot on the Canucks Advent Calendar.
