It is looking more and more like Zhang Weili’s first title defense will be against the former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. However, the UFC has not formally confirmed this match-up.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk v Weili Zhang Targeted for UFC 248 March 7.
UFC 248 – We May Know Who, But We Do Not Know Where.
UFC 248
It is being widely reported that there is a verbal agreement in place for the strawweights at UFC 248. Both fighters camps have reps that have been quoted as to a deal about to be finalized.
Now to further keep things in question, the UFC has not announced a location or venue for the 248 card as of yet.
Zhang is coming off a 42-second stoppage to take the title from the former strawweight Queen, Jessica Andrade. This took place in China at the end of August. The fight took her record to an impressive 20-1 and made her a perfect 4-0 in the UFC. Zhang, who is the first Chinese champion in the UFC, was posting on social media that she was ready and welcomed facing Joanna for her first defense.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk rebounded in October with a win over Michelle Waterson at the UFC Tampa event. This victory was her first fight in 2019 after a physically and mentally challenging 2018. The year saw Joanna go 1-2. To be realistic, one of those losses was to Valentina Shevchenko at Flyweight. It seemed like a questionable career decision to most MMA observers at the time. Joanna was previously a dominant champion with 5 title defenses in 2 years from 2015-2017. Joanna has publicly & through her social media said that her focus and mission is to regain the strawweight title.
If both stay healthy, we should see a great matchup with two well-rounded fighters with deep roots in kickboxing on March 7, 2020.
