I’ve been thinking about the Boston Bruins and I believe that because the top line is on fire with scoring, these other players don’t get much credit for their hard work. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pasta, Bergy, and Marshy! I just think there are others to talk about. Here are the top 10 players that I think need to have a spotlight.
Let’s start with number 10
# 20 – Joakim Nordstrom – Center
Joakim Nordstrom (Nordi) started out his career as a Chicago Blackhawks but soon found his game three months later with the Carolina Hurricanes. On July 1st, 2018, the Bruins signed him as a free agent. Last year’s stats are more impressive than this year, but I believe that by the end of this season he will have blossomed into having a great year! And let us not forget that his name is on Lord Stanley’s Cup.
And Then at #9
#75 Connor Clifton – Defense
Connor Clifton is the rookie out of New Jersey and has had an impressive year this season. in the last 42 games, he’s only had 2 goals and one assist, but I think he’s finally finding his game and he too will blossom out of nowhere. And, as of December 1, Clifton has played the magical number of gams with the Bruins to be considered on the roster. He will now require clearing waivers to be sent back to Providence. Now, Let’s talk about #8
#10 Anders Bjork – Left Wing
Anders Bjork has already blossomed into what we could call a pro in the making. In the 19 games that he has played this season for the Bruins, he has 4 goals and 3 assists. Bjork was credited with his first NHL point, an assist, in his debut against the Nashville Predators on Oct. 5, 2017, and scored his first NHL goal against the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 17. There’s no doubt he has the speed and the skill to succeed in the NHL; his biggest problem could be finding a place in the Bruins’ glut of talented young forwards.
On to #7
#43 Danton Heinen – Left Wing
Danton Heinen signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Bruins on April 12, 2016. Heinen got his chance in Boston early in the 2017-18 season when David Krejci was injured and made the most of it. He scored his first two NHL goals on Oct. 26, 2017, and soon became a valuable two-way contributor capable of playing all three positions up front and sliding up and down the lineup. He keeps his feet moving, never stops competing and blends responsible defense with the willingness to get his nose dirty in front of the net. In the 27 games that he has played this year, he has scored 5 goals and 7 assists. The most impressive thing about Danton Heinen is that the Bruins’ opponents don’t score when he is on the ice. He has had 32 goals in his career. He is definitely a team player and he can and will only get better with time.
Looking at Number 6, We Have:
#41 Jaroslav Halak – Goalie
Jaroslav Halak’s career started in the 2006 – 2007 season with Montreal. Before becoming a member of the Bruins in the 2018-2019 season, Halak has been all over the NHL. He’s played with several teams, but in my opinion, he is a damn good goalie! I think that Bruins’ coach Bruce Cassidy agrees because Halak plays every other game and I think he is a good match in being Tuukka Rask’s back up, though many say that the backup term is not valid. Rask and Halak are a 1-1A tandem unstoppable backstop team.
Coming in at Number 5
#13 Charlie Coyle – Center
Charlie Coyle was traded to Boston by the Minnesota Wilds for Ryan Donato and a conditional pick in 2019 NHL Draft, February 20, 2019. Since then Charlie has been a great addition to the Boston team. He’s played 27 games this season and has 5 goals and 10 assists. Coyle may not be a goal scorer, but he is playmaker and that fits in with the Bruins’ system of play. That to me says that he will continue to help get those goals and even some on his own. 😁
And at Number 4
#14 Chris Wagner – Right Wing
I love Wags! Chris Wagner is so energetic on the ice and his celebrations after scoring shows his passion for the game. In 2019, he won the 7th player award. We acquired him in 2018 as a free agent and from what I know the Bruins fans do not want him to go anywhere else!
#3 We’re getting closer to Number 1!
#74 Jake DeBrusk – Left Wing
Jake DeBrusk could not have been paired with a greater player than David Krejci. I believe that under Krejci’s wing (pun intended) he has grown into an incredible player. DeBrusk is an enforcer and knows how to score. In the last 22 games, he has scored 6 goals and has had 6 assists. At age 23, his career has just begun and Bruins’ fans can only hope that like Krejci and Bergeron, DeBrusk will stay a Bruin.
#2 – Are you getting excited?
#73 Charlie McAvoy – Defense
I was so happy when he got resigned this year. Charlie McAvoy pairs up well with Zdeno Chara. He is a good defenseman and the heir apparent on the blueline. Chosen by the Boston Bruins with the No. 14 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, McAvoy made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut in the Eastern Conference First Round against the Ottawa Senators after several injuries to the Bruins defense. He had three assists and averaged 26:12 of ice time — second on the Bruins and first among NHL rookies — in the six-game loss.
Drum Roll Please! Number 1
#46 David Krejci – Center – Alternate
David Krejci is one of the most talented players outside of the three players on the top line. He has had so many linemates come and go, but he adapts to them and teaches them a thing or two. I’ve seen him pass the puck just to give a rookie his first NHL goal. He’s also a great goal scorer. When he is on his game, Krej is on his game! Krejci has been a Bruin since 2006 (and only a Bruin) and has shown us time and time again just what teamwork means. Outside of maybe Tukka, he, in my opinion, is the most under acknowledge player on the Bruins roster.
So that’s my top 10, I realize that there are more Bruins players that deserve recognition as well, but then we’d be here all day. 🤣 All of the players listed above make the Bruins the team what they are. The top line could not do it without them. Again, don’t get me wrong. I adore the top line, but these others should have a spotlight on them from time to time.
