Each week a few players in the NFL rise above the rest. Here, I will pick the best player from the AFC on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. I will then do the same for the NFC players.
Offense – Drew Lock (DEN)
The Denver Broncos pulled off a massive upset this Sunday, beating the previously 8-4 Houston Texans. Lock threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns while connecting on 22 of his 27 pass attempts. He threw one interception in the game but led his team to a shocking 38-24 victory over the Texans. The Broncos are now 5-8 and still mathematically in the playoff hunt in the AFC. This was just Lock’s second career start in the NFL.
Defense – Denzel Ward (CLE)
The Cleveland Browns played the Cincinnati Bengals this past weekend and came away with the win. The Browns came out on top 27-19. However, to start the game, the Browns struggled, and the Bengals were looking to go up two scores. Then, Denzel Ward completely shifted the momentum early in the game. Ward’s 61-yard pick-six gave the Browns the lead and all of the momentum. It was Cleveland’s first pick-six since October of 2017. Ward also had five tackles and two passes defensed in the game.
Special Teams – Harrison Butker (KC)
Harrison Butker has been one of the best kickers in the NFL this season. He has the most points scored for a kicker this year with 123 points. On Sunday, Butker went three for three on his field goals and was perfect on his two extra-point attempts. His longest field goal was 48 yards. He totaled 11 points in the Chiefs’ crucial win over the New England Patriots in Foxborough.
Offense – Drew Brees (NO)
The New Orleans Saints fell to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 48-46 on Sunday. Even though they didn’t come away with the win, the Saints still have a lot of positive things to take away from the game. Drew Brees threw for 349 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran it in for a score. He led the Saints down the field late in the fourth quarter to take a 46-45 lead after a failed two-point conversion. Sadly for the Saints, Jimmy Garoppolo led his team down the field to win it. Still, it was an amazing performance by Brees.
Defense – Damontae Kazee (ATL)
Damontae Kazee led the Atlanta Falcons defensively by forcing three turnovers this weekend. The Falcons beat the Carolina Panthers 40-20. Kazee had three tackles, two interceptions, and forced one fumble. He now has forced four turnovers in the last four games for Atlanta. The Falcons are 4-9 on the season, but Kazee’s performance of late is very promising.
Special Teams – Robbie Gould (SF)
Robbie Gould went two for two on his field goal attempts on Sunday afternoon. Gould also connected on all six of his extra points in the high scoring match-up against the New Orleans Saints. His longest field goal was 41 yards, but it was the shorter of the two that mattered most. His 30-yard field goal as the clock ran out, lifted the 49ers over the Saints in a wild game. The 49ers won the game 48-46 behind 12 points from Gould.
