About a month ago, I was reading a preview for a Virginia men’s basketball game. At the bottom of the page, I noticed all the betting lines and odds. I noticed an over/under that seemed way too high. As a Virginia fan, I knew that we had lost a lot of key players from last year’s championship team. They were still going to be elite on defense, however, they would not be scoring in high numbers, even against the really small schools.
I texted a few friends along the lines of, “If I was a betting man, I’d bet my life’s savings on the under.” The game finished well under the projected total but aside from looking smart through a screen, there was no glory to making such a pick with nothing at stake.
Again, another preview, and another ridiculously high over/under. Once again, I texted my friends and family, saying the same thing about betting the under. Yet again, I was right. I knew my team better than most people but I also had nothing at risk.
I understood what a money line was and what the spread meant but I had never bet on anything through a sportsbook before. Soon after, I met a guy who does gamble on sports and does so successfully. With some helpful tips and the confidence of a guy who would have “bet his life savings,” I decided to give it a go.
My Journey Began
In the week or so I’ve been betting on sports, I’ve found success. Before you ask, no I did not bet my life savings. What I did was start with very little money so there was minimal risk. From there, I was able to win enough to quadruple my money in a week.
Over the course of the week, I made bets on stuff I felt confident about. I quickly realized how often an upset can happen. I’m a big college basketball fan, and yet, many teams inside the top five in the country lost. They lost to unranked teams at that. I’m sure I was far from the only person to bet on those teams that lost. Those of you who have gambled on sports know that it’s good to know your stuff, but even then it’s all a crapshoot.
The Cardinals almost broke the bank
It’s safe to say I won’t be putting my life savings on Louisville anytime soon, but what I will say is that I am looking forward to my journey through sports betting. I want to share my experiences as I go through the highs and lows. The “sure-things” that turn into upsets and the “good calls” that make me look like I actually know what I’m doing.
I feel like I know sports very well but that isn’t always enough. Being lucky and conservative seem to be a good strategy. Being too confident can really hurt you. As a Virginia fan, I still remember losing to UMBC in the round of 64, nearly two years ago.
As I take this journey, I hope that I can encourage people to try their hand in sports gambling. It can be rewarding and stressful and I’ve only bet low amounts over a week. I can’t imagine the stress levels of the people who bet everything they have on a game. I hope to share my experiences in what works and what hurts. Hopefully I don’t make too many mistakes. Whatever happens, I hope you enjoy my journey.
