Goldy Goldy Gone
The Arizona Diamondbacks have had many faces from Luis Gonzalez to Randy Johnson. However, looking back on the past 5 years, the face of this franchise has been Paul Goldschmidt. Every time an individual referenced the D-backs, Paul was the main player that would come to mind. America’s first baseman and 6X National League All-Star. Goldy has sure made an impact on this organization throughout the years.
However not everything is meant to last forever and unfortunately for Dbacks fans, the shock of a lifetime was about to make breaking news. On December 5, 2018, the Diamondbacks traded Paul Goldschmidt to the Cardinals in exchange for Carsen Kelly, Luke Weaver, and Andrew Young. The face of the franchise gone in an unexpected moment.
The Search for a New Face Begins
A moment of impact and fans could not help but think, who will be the face of the team now. Will it be David Peralta, the enthusiastic outfielder? Archie Bradley who shined in 2017 with the “Fear the Beard” logo and overpowering energy to bring more fans into Chase field. The obvious choices, but a second baseman with a high volume of talent was about to steal the show.
A Diamond in the Rough
Ketel Marte, the young second baseman from the Dominican Republic, was having quite the season, beginning with winning a starting position in the 2019 All-Star Game in Cleveland. Ketel “El Nino” Marte was part of a trade in 2016 with the Mariners. El Nino took over second base after the Dbacks parted with Jean Segura and later on took a role in the outfield as a centerfielder.
El Nino on Fire
Let’s take a look into Marte’s All-Star 2019 season batting and fielding wise. Ketel ended the season with a 329. Batting AVG, 32 HR, 97 R, 92 RBI, and not to mention 187 hits. Quite an impressive year for the 26-year-old going beyond his past numbers in the MLB. In comparison to his 2017 season, where the young star had 58 H and 2 HR, it is safe to say Marte has made a name for himself with the Dbacks.
Marte the WOW Factor
Ketel wowed the crowd offensive and defensive wise a swing of a bat or a dive of a catch. Before injury ended Marte’s season, he played 107 games in Center and infield with only three errors. Not bad with this being the first season the young player started in centerfield and gradually played in the infield when needed.
New Season, New All-Star
2019 brought many firsts for this young athlete. Not only did Marte rank 4th in the NL MVP race, but Ketel was voted to start in the All-Star game. Only one other D-backs player has started in an All-Star Game and that player was Paul Goldschmidt. In July 2019, Marte went to his first-ever All-Star Game and what a game it was.
Marte produced the first hit for the National Team hitting a double into center. The National Team may have lost in the All-Star Game, but Ketel Marte shined through the odds. However, the All-Star was not the end for this young star. In September 2019 Ketel was named Player of the Week and ended the season ranking 2nd for triples in the league.
The Face of the Franchise
Ketel Marte has proven to be an all-around player bringing in energy and leadership in the clubhouse. By adding his All-Star season, Marte could very well be the new face of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After 2019 when fans think about the Dbacks Ketel Marte is now the player that comes to mind. A player that can only go up from this past season and make a bigger splash in the MLB.
The Next NL MVP
If we’re keeping the MLB in mind as a whole, maybe Marte will be the name fans will see in the National League MVP ballot this upcoming season. The numbers produced this season can only excite the baseball world of what is to come in 2020. One thing is certain, Ketel “El Nino” Marte will be a name seen quite often throughout the MLB and team shops.
