Overtime Heroics is back with their Power Rankings for the college basketball season. It was a rather light week for college ball, as some of the top teams did not even play a game this week. There were some noteworthy upsets this week as well, so some questions need to be answered. Does the number one team losing mean they drop in the rankings? Do some storied programs losing mean them being dropped from our rankings? And do some teams move up despite not playing? Read below and you will find out.
1. Kansas (9-1) Last Week 4
The Jayhawks are flying high as for the first time this year as they are number one in Overtime Heroics power rankings. Since losing their opening game to Duke, Kansas has rattled off nine straight victories. With victories over programs like Dayton and Colorado, Overtime Heroics is impressed. This week will feature a new challenge, as they take on Villanova on the road. Time to see what Dotson and Azubuike are made of.
2. Gonzaga (11-1) Last Week 6
Mark Few’s Gonzaga team picked up another victory over a top twenty-five team this week. This was a statement win for the program as they visited Arizona and won by four points. Corey Kispert led the charge with eighteen points and three other Bulldogs hit double-digit scoring. Gonzaga could go on a run here for the next number of weeks, as their schedule is weak. If Gonzaga does, they could find themselves at number one.
3. Louisville (10-1) Last Week 1
Down goes Louisville! The Cardinals lost their first game of the year, which means they drop two spots on our list. Kansas and Gonzaga also have losses on their resume, but theirs were to Duke and Michigan respectively. Now losing to Texas Tech is nothing to be ashamed of. However, losing by thirteen points is less so. Louisville bounced back with a thirty-two point win over Eastern Kentucky. Overtime Heroics anticipates Louisville will bounce back.
4. Duke Blue Devils (9-1) Last Week 5
It was a week off for the Blue Devils. They have not played since their December 6th victory over Virginia Tech. This time off was much needed, as Cassius Stanley needs time to heal from injury. Duke faces Wofford this week, who are coming off a victory over North Carolina. Coach K and the Blue Devils better be ready.
5. Kentucky (8-1) Last Week 7
Kentucky is on a six-game winning streak since their notable loss to Evansville. No real notable victories in that stretch, but victories nonetheless. The next three games are massive for the Wildcats. They face Utah on Wednesday, before visiting Ohio State on Saturday. Nick Richards and Ashton Hagans will need to lead the charge in these matchups.
6. Ohio State (9-1) Last Week 2
Ohio State also tumbled down Overtime Heroics rankings this week. Their loss against a below-average Minnesota team real hurt their stock. Minnesota led that game nearly the entire way winning by thirteen points when all was said and done.
7. Maryland (10-1) Last Week 3
Another top-five team drops after a disappointing loss. This time it was Maryland who took on Penn State. This was Maryland’s first true test as they were on the road and lost. Penn State jumped out to a ten-point lead and never relinquished it. They struggled shooting all night, finishing at thirty-three percent on the night. They also turned the ball over twenty times, which shows how sloppy they played. Thursday they will take on Seton Hall on the road and Overtime Heroics hopes they bounce back.
8. Memphis (9-1) Last Week 9
The Memphis Tigers move up another spot on Overtime Heroics rankings. The AP poll may not be giving them the respect they deserve but we are. They beat a talented Tennessee team on the road by four points. It was a sloppy game for Memphis, but they held Tennessee to twenty-five percent shooting. Memphis would have moved up further, but seventeen turnovers and stars poor shooting prevented that. Every game played is another game closer to James Wiseman’s return.
9. Oregon (8-2) Last Week 15
Oregon’s two losses came against Gonzaga and North Carolina, but they have other notable wins. Defeating Seton Hall and Memphis earlier in the year was good, but their latest win was great. They visited the Crisler Center to take on Juwan Howard’s Michigan team and pulled out the win. Oregon was up eight at the end of the first half but ended up going to overtime. Payton Pritchard led the charge with twenty-three points in their one-point win. Montana and Texas Southern are their two matchups this week and we expect them to comfortably get two wins.
10. Baylor (8-1) Last Week 11
The Baylor Bears picked up a huge win this week against a ranked opponent. They welcomed the Butler Bulldogs to Ferrell Center and it was quite the game. Baylor jumped out to a ten-point lead at the half and Butler chipped away at it the entire second half. It came down to the last possession and Baylor held on for the one-point win. Baylor should dismantle TN Martin this week in their only game.
11. Auburn (9-0) Last Week 12
Auburn remains one of only four teams in college basketball to be undefeated. They took on a tough Saint Louis team this week and prevailed at home. They won the Mike Slive Invitational led by J’Von McCormick with twenty points. Next up is North Carolina State on Thursday at home. If the wins keep piling up, Auburn could find themselves in Overtime Heroic’s top ten.
12. Virginia (8-1) Last Week 10
No game for the Cavaliers this week means they drop two spots on our rankings. This is not slight on Virginia, just other teams had big weeks. Virginia will take on Stony Brook and South Carolina this week. A couple of wins could move them back up our rankings.
13. Dayton (8-1) Last Week 13
Dayton holds strong at thirteen with another victory this week. They did so in dominating fashion, defeating the Drake Bulldogs by thirty-one points. Obi Toppin led the charge with a nineteen point, eight-rebound night. Dayton welcomes Mount Marty and visits Air Force this week. Overtime Heroics predicts two wins for the Flyers.
14. Michigan State (7-3) Last Week 16
Other teams losing is precisely why Michigan State moves up two spots. Did the Spartans get two wins this week? Yes, however, wins over Rutgers and Oakland are a tad underwhelming. Cassius Winston impressed with a twenty-three point, seven assist game against Rutgers. He will need to continue to play well for Michigan State to bounce back from their early-season troubles.
15. Arizona (10-2) Last Week 14
Arizona had an up and down week which is why they felt one spot on our list. Arizona beat lowly Omaha by fifty points at home to open the week. Three days later they welcomed powerhouse Gonzaga to McKale Memorial Center. Zeke Nnaji did all he could, finishing with sixteen points and seventeen rebounds, but the Wildcats still lost. If Nico Mannion could have hit anything they would have had a chance. However, he hit just three shots on twenty attempts.
16. Michigan (8-3) Last Week 8
Michigan is free, free falling that is. They go from top five to outside the top fifteen in just two weeks. The Wolverines were winless this week in two attempts. They lost to Illinois by nine points on the road before an overtime loss at home to Oregon. Overtime Heroics is hoping Michigan can get back on track against Presbyterian this week. If not, they will be off our power rankings.
17. Villanova (8-2) Last Week 21
It was quite the matchup for Villanova at home this week. Not typically a basketball program, Delaware had started nine and one coming into their Villanova game. Delaware played them tight the whole way, but Villanova ultimately won by eight points. Other teams losing is why Villanova jumped up four spots. Villanova will welcome number one Kansas this week and we cannot wait for that one.
18. Butler (10-1) Last Week 18
A slip up against Baylor earlier in the week drops the Bulldogs one spot on the rankings. Their loss is nothing to be ashamed of. Losing by one point to a top twenty-five opponent like Baylor is okay in Overtime Heroics eyes. They followed up that loss with a twenty-five point win on the road. Their next test will be against the Purdue Boilermakers on the road. A win at Purdue would be huge for Butler.
19. West Virginia (9-1) Last Week NR
From off the rankings to the top twenty is West Virginia. Why such a jump you ask? Well for one the Mountaineers have only lost one game. That came against nine and two St Johns on the road by two points. With wins over Pittsburgh on the road and Wichita State at home, West Virginia has impressed us greatly. Two wins this past week was too hard to ignore. That paired with others losing meant we had to feature them in the top twenty.
20. Penn State (9-2) Last Week NR
The Nittany Lions are having a strong year on the court and finally crack our power rankings. Their thirty-two point loss to powerhouse Ohio State was alarming for us and kept them off the rankings then. But this is the here and now and have improved since that deflating loss. A seven-point win against Maryland and a two-point win against Alabama could not be ignored. The Big Ten is always tough and Penn State playing well makes it even tougher this year.
21. Tennessee (7-2) Last Week 19
Tough week for the Volunteers as they picked up a home loss to Memphis. Tennessee held the talented Tigers to only fifty-one points but shot only twenty-five percent in the game. Tennessee will have a chance to bounce back right away against Cincinnati on Wednesday. Jordan Bowden and Lamonte Turner will need to play well to knock off the Bearcats.
22. Liberty (12-0) Last Week NR
We love teams that do not lose games and Liberty is one of those teams. Liberty had yet to play a big program, but that changed this past week. They played Vanderbilt on the road and picked up the upset victory. Their five-point win was too tough to ignore and that is why Overtime Heroics featured them. They will face SEC giant LSU in a few weeks as well. Another victory on the road there could be huge for their NCAA tournament chances.
23. San Diego State (10-0) Last Week 24
Kawhi Leonard’s alma mater is still undefeated and on the rise in our power rankings. They did not play any games this week, so they could only move up one spot. After ten days off San Diego State gets San Diego Christian at home. That should be an easy win before visiting Utah on Saturday. That game will be the Aztec’s first real test of the young season.
24. Washington (7-2) Last Week 25
No games for the Washington Huskies this week either. Sometimes not playing at all can help a team’s power rankings position. What helps more is playing two weak opponents like Washington will this week. Two wins against Seattle and Ball State would mean a continued rise. A loss to either, however, means dropping off the Overtime Heroics rankings
25. VCU (8-2) Last Week NR
Virginia Commonwealth sneaks back onto our list after bouncing back from their tough finish to November. The Rams picked up a ten-point win over the Missouri State Bears to jump back onto the list. We are hoping Virginia Commonwealth does not disappoint us this week. They visit Charleston and Wichita State in two tough road games. Will the Rams pounce on the Cougars? Can they shock the Shockers? Only time will tell.
