The 10 Most Defining Devils Wins this Decade: Carter of Liberties

The year 2020 is almost here, and the New Jersey Devils are hoping their bad seasons end with a new decade. A new decade could show signs of a team changing, and the New Jersey Devils could be one of them. First, they must fix their issues starting with a new head coach. Then they must show us that they can play better to keep up with other teams. With only 6 days left, let’s look at the top 10 best wins for the New Jersey Devils in this decade. Our first playoff win on our list features a memorable goal by Ryan Carter, against our rivals at a very crucial time.

How big was this game for the Devils to begin with?

This is the first time we will talk about the playoffs on our list but it won’t be the last either. The Devils faced off against their biggest rival in a 2012 playoffs, the New York Rangers. This win came at a big time because it’s the Eastern Conference Finals. The Devils won game 4 by a score of 4-1, to tie up the series 2-2. Now they were back at MSG hoping to win Game 5 and grab a 3-2 series lead, so let’s see how they were able to shock the Rangers crowd at home. The Devils needed to come out strong, and that’s what they did early.

How did the Devils dominate early?

Almost 3 minutes in, Stephen Gionta put one past Henrik Lundqvist on a backhand to put the Devils up 1-0. Another Devils goal was scored shortly after. The puck was first shot by Adam Henrique. The the puck hit Patrik Elias‘s and Artem Anisimov‘s skates which went past Lundqvist. 5 minutes later, a shot by Travis Zajac to put the Devils up 3-0 early in the game. Unfortunately after that, the Rangers were able to turn around to come back in this game.

How did the Rangers respond to the Devils hot start?

Brandon Prust finally gave Ranger fans something to cheer late in the 1st period, after shooting the puck past Martin Brodeur while he was falling down. In the second period, just 32 seconds in, Ryan Callahan score the only goal of the period. The goal though was reviewed to make sure Callahan did not kick the puck in, which he did not so the goal was allowed. In the third period, the Ranger’s were able to tie the game up early again, this time 17 seconds in. After a crucial mistake by Brodeur, Marian Gaborik shot the puck which Brodeur thought he held on to. But the puck went over the line. The Devils knew that this effort to let the Rangers come back in this game was unacceptable.

How did the Devils respond to the Rangers comeback

The Devils knew that in a playoff series like this, letting their opponents back into games is never good. But the game’s main star changed the game in a big way. Late in the 3rd, a Stephen Gionta pass got through to Ryan Carter, who buries it past Lundqvist to make it 4-3 Devils. The Ranger crowd was, most likely, shocked and upset by what Ryan Carter just did. The Devils were able to score a goal at a very crucial time. With 32 seconds left and Lundqvist to the bench, Zach Parise iced the game by scoring in the empty net. The Devils had won game 5, and took a 3-2 lead in the series.

How big was the Ryan Carter goal on this game?

A playoff run by any team will come to have different areas of success and difficulties. This game is no exception. The Devils showed that they can be good, while also showing heart and dedication when another team pushes them around. This playoff game isn’t the only example of that, you will see more of them later on. Also, it had been a long time since the Devils were able to keep up with the Rangers in a playoff series. When Ryan Carter scored that goal, it showed that anyone on this Devils team could be special at any point. But for the next game was even more memorable, but you may have to wait for that one.
