Julio Cesar Martinez: Mexico’s Tiny Terror

Boxing fans may have a problem with Hearn’s veracity during his interviews each week. Here, the head of Matchroom Boxing USA spoke all facts. The 24-year old Martinez is a dangerous fighter. In addition, he makes exciting fights.

With a quick look at his last two fights fans can surmise the diminutive champion is one to watch for in boxing.

Martinez Adds Eye-Catching Outings In the 2nd Half of 2020

Back in August at London’s O2 Arena at the end of the night Vasiliy Lomachenko picking up a third title at lightweight was the story. On the undercard, Julio Cesar dismantled Sunny Edwards. The UK’s Edwards was an unbeaten champion making his third title defense.

Martinez stopped Edwards in the third round. However, a landed body shot as Edwards was down nullified the Mexican’s KO win. The official outcome turned into a no contest. As a result, Julio Cesar exited the ring without the WBC Flyweight title. The WBC ordered a re-match. Edwards cited problems with making weight, and therefore moved up to a higher weight division.

A Second Chance at Boxing Glory

With the belt vacated on December 20 Martinez, and former champion Cristofer Rosales clashed to determine its rightful owner. Rosales dropped a decisive unanimous decision at O2 to Edwards last December. Julio Cesar wouldn’t need judges’ scorecards.

Rosales found some solutions to Martinez’ two-handed power punching attack early in the bout. Martinez dealt with some adversity, sustaining a cut above his right eye.

The taller Rosales’ jab gradually became less effective at keeping the stalking Martinez at bay. With the Nicaraguan’s 7-inch reach advantage rendered useless by Martinez’ movement, Rosales endured punishment in one-sided rounds in the 5th, 6th and 7th. He boxed with some success in round eight.

Martinez opened the ninth round in a southpaw stance to initiate his attack. Similar to the aforementioned rounds, another vicious head and body attack soon ensued. Raul Caiz Jr stopped the fight.

In conclusion, Martinez ultimately received the championship he appeared to have won back in August. His performance, again, was show-stealing. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s fifth round retirement overshadowed both Martinez’ stoppage and Daniel Jacobs’ 168-pound debut. But disregard that! Enjoy the sport and look to see when the Eddie Reynoso-guided champion will be in action next.
