The year 2020 is almost here, and the New Jersey Devils are hoping their bad seasons end with a new decade. A new decade could show signs of a team changing, and the New Jersey Devils could be one of them. First, they must fix their issues starting with a new head coach. Then they must show us that they can play better to keep up with other teams. With only four days left, let’s look at the top 10 best wins for the New Jersey Devils in this decade. See how Pat Maroon finally brought the win the fans had been waiting for 6 years for at the time.
How did the first two periods go overall?
The Devils faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 5th 2018. A win here gives the Devils a playoff berth for the first time since 2012. But before the organization can truly celebrate, they need to show why they earn that spot. During the 1st period, a costly penalty to Nico Hischier for tripping put the Devils already in trouble for a game they cannot lose. The Maple leafs took only 11 seconds on the power play to put them up 1-0. William Nylander took a pass from Auston Matthews, who then turned around to shoot it, which ended up beating Keith Kinkaid.
In the 2nd period, Pat Maroon was about to have his most important game as a Devil. He got it started with an assist for a goal to tie the game at 1. He gave a pass to Pavel Zacha, who gets it past Frederik Andersen and the crossbar. Both Willam Nylander and Michael Grabner, had chances to give their clubs the lead, but they go nowhere. Under 3 minutes to go, Maroon gave a pass to Miles Wood, who buried it near Anderson, giving the Devils the lead.
How did the Devils respond to a Maple Leafs ambush in the third?
While both teams stopped scoring after that, the Devils had one period left. Maroon had a chance to get a goal, but he was unable to get one past Anderson. Maroon had two assists on the game, which gave him total of 2 points in the game. He and Miles Wood had the most points all night. But while Maroon was spectacular, Keith Kinkaid was just as special. The Maple Leafs kept finding ways to get chances to tie it, but Kinkaid knows he cannot let the Devils, and they’re fans, down at a time like this. While the Maple Leafs got a few chances under a Devils power play with under 10 seconds, it wasn’t enough. The clock struck 0:00, and the fans began roaring, knowing that the team that had struggled to make the postseason are going to experience it for the first time in a very long time.
What was at stake for the Devils when they won this game?
For the Devils, the victory here gave the fans a really big gift they had been waiting a long time for. Being a team that was always not good enough to make the playoffs is very frustrating. Getting the chance to play extra hockey is always fun for any team. The Devils were not one of those teams after their 2012 run. They had been shown up by other good teams, and had to deal with a lot of problems in their organization with coaching. Getting that win finally brought the atmosphere of playoff hockey back to New Jersey. The next game on the list however will be a valuable game that Devils fans will remember forever.
