The Packers vs the Lions: Week 17 Preview

How Have Their Seasons Gone?

Week 17 will see the Green Bay Packers vs. the Detroit Lions. Green Bay is entering the game 12-3, having clinched the NFC North after their 23-10 win in Minnesota last week. It was a great game by Aaron Jones, who finished with 24 touches, 160 yards, and two touchdowns. The Packers defense was completely dominant, allowing just 139 yards of total offense, seven first downs, and held them to 27% on third down. Za’Darius Smith exploded with 3.5 sacks, bringing his season total to 13.5. The Packers can secure the number one overall seed in the playoffs with a win here and some help.

The Lions enter the game 3-11-1, coming off their eighth straight loss. Coming off a very uninspiring loss to the Denver Broncos, Detroit has seemed to throw in the towel. They finished that game with just 191 total yards. The offense was sluggish. Even with the return of Kerryon Johnson, they couldn’t get any momentum. The defense had zero sacks and turnovers and allowed 25 first downs. Although they may want to play for a better draft position, Detroit will look to give Green Bay all it has left.

Three Keys For Success

Getting Pressure On The Quarterback

The Packers have 40 sacks on the year, after getting five against Kirk Cousins. With Rookie David Blough under center, getting pressure will force him into mistakes and turnovers.

Get Some Turnovers

Green Bay has 16 interceptions on the year and is going against David Blough, who has thrown five in just four games. Green Bay will want to get out to an early lead, and capitalizing on mistakes will help.

Hit Some Milestones

Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, and Davante Adams are all in line to hit some season milestones. Rodgers needs 321 passing yards to get to 4000 on the season. Aaron Jones needs 16 yards rushing and one touchdown to get to 1000 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns. Finally, Davante Adams needs just 96 receiving to hit 1000 yards on the season as well. All three are attainable, as Detroit has the 32nd ranked passing defense.

As important as it is for Green Bay to win this week, it’ll be equally important that they stay healthy. The Packers should come out and roll through them, even getting playing time for the backups. Packers will finish the season 13-3 after a 31-16.
