Michigan’s Recruiting Hot Streak

When Juwan Howard was hired by Michigan fans wondered if he could improve the programs success on the recruiting trail. While Michigan was successful on the court with former head coach John Beilein it never had success landing elite talent. Under Beilein Michigan only secured one top 10 recruiting class and seemed to lack something when it came to recruiting. Michigan always missed out on top level prospects like Ohio State guard D.J Carton or Celtics guard Jaylen Brown. However, Juwan Howard is turning the tide and making early waves in the recruiting world.

Juwan Howard came into Michigan recruiting at a disadvantage being a first year head coach and having no experience at the college level. Things didn’t start off great for Howard losing the commitment of highly regarded wing Jalen Wilson to the Kansas Jayhawks. Despite the loss Howard landed Franz Wagner a German wing with a lot of upside which gave fans something to be excited about. This was one of the first signs of Howards ability to cater to young prospects and secure a big signing.

The Biggest splash Howards made in his time in Ann Arbor is the pledge of five star forward Isaiah Todd. He leads a stout 2020 class for Howard that has a group of hungry Michigan fans excited for the future. Along with Todd the class includes long time commit Zeb Jackson and Michigan’s most recent acquisition Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson recently picked the Wolverines over powerhouses such as Duke and Louisville. This again shows Howards ability to get Michigan places it hasn’t been in a while. Michigan’s 2020 class is currently ranked number six in the nation and has the potential to climb even higher in the future if it adds a player like five star Josh Christopher.

This kind of early recruiting success is rarely seen for a first year head coach but not unheard of. Penny Hardaway and Memphis have also seen a huge jump in recruiting in a short amount of time. Howard has silenced some critics and looks to build a powerhouse on and off the court in Ann Arbor.
