It is about that time again for the Overtime Heroics college basketball power rankings list. There were a few games that took place over the holiday season, including some spirited rivalry games. Our number one seed had the week off, but the rest of our top ten was in action. So who made the Overtime Heroics list? And who fell out of the rankings altogether?
1. Gonzaga (13-1) Last Week 1
No games for the number one team in the country this past week. That will certainly change this week as they have three games on their schedule. They welcome Detroit to McCarthey Athletic Center Monday evening. Gonzaga then opens up West Coast Conference play on the road against Portland. Lastly, they take on Pepperdine at home. None of these teams pose a significant test, so expect Gonzaga to remain the number one team next week as well.
2. Duke Blue Devils (11-1) Last Week 4
The Blue Devils move up two spots after their victory over Brown at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke struggled shooting in that game, only hitting 44% of their shots and 12% of their three-pointers. Despite their shooting struggles they held Brandon Anderson to just sixteen points and won by twenty-five points. Duke will welcome Boston College before traveling to Miami this week. Their ACC schedule will be tough, but these two games will be some of their easiest tests.
3. Kansas (10-2) Last Week 5
The Jayhawks are back in the top three with Louisville and Ohio State losing. Kansas had just one game on their schedule this week, as they traveled to take on Stanford. They were able to pick up a sixteen point victory over the 11-2 Cardinals. They were led by Isaiah Moss seventeen points off the bench. Kansas has another tough test Saturday as they welcome West Virginia. The Mountaineers just defeated Ohio State so do not be surprised if they upset the Jayhawks as well.
4. Louisville (11-2) Last Week 2
Louisville may have lost to Kentucky, but they put up one hell of a fight. One of basketball’s best college rivalries had another instant classic. Louisville took Kentucky to overtime on the road, losing 78-70. Jordan Nwora struggled, shooting just two for ten and finished with eight points in the game. Steven Enoch led the Cardinals with eighteen points, which was huge for them. Louisville will have to bounce back quickly as they open up ACC play against Florida State.
5. Memphis (11-1) Last Week 6
The Tigers just sneak into our top five with other programs losing. Memphis welcomed New Orleans to the FedEx Forum and beat them down. Their forty-two point win was led by Precious Achiuwa’s eighteen points and ten rebounds double-double. Memphis opens the AAC play against Tulane Monday night before welcoming Georgia on Saturday. Big week for the Tigers coming up.
6. Oregon (11-2) Last Week 7
The Ducks move up another spot with an impressive victory this past week. They hosted Alabama State and defeated the Hornets by thirty-nine points. Chris Duarte had himself a game, scoring thirty-one points, including six three-pointers. Oregon will travel to Colorado on Thursday to take on a tough Buffaloes team. A win there will all but clinch them a top-five spot on Overtime Heroics rankings.
7. Ohio State (11-2) Last Week 3
People may be wondering why we punished Ohio State more than Louisville for their loss. This is due to Ohio State losing to a lesser opponent and doing so at home. Ohio State lost by eight points to the Mountaineers as they shot just thirty-one percent in the game. They turned the ball over twenty-two times, which led to the loss. The Buckeyes will need to bounce back as they welcome Wisconsin on Friday.
8. Auburn (12-0) Last Week 9
The Tigers just keep winning games! We keep saying it week after week and they continue to roll. This time Auburn played Lipscomb at home and picked up a twenty-seven point win. Danjel Purifoy led the Tigers with seventeen points and nine rebounds as they rolled over the Bisons. Auburn will open up SEC play on the road against Mississippi State. It should be an entertaining matchup.
9. Baylor (9-1) Last Week 8
No game for the Baylor Bears this past week, as they got some much-needed rest. This means they drop one spot in the rankings, but that could all change this week. They will get the opportunity to shake the rust off against Jackson State Monday night. That will be followed by welcoming Texas to open up Big 12 play. This conference will be tough and they will need to knock off Texas to get off to a good start.
10. Villanova (8-2) Last Week 10
No game for Villanova this week means they hold strong at number ten. Monday evening they will host Xavier to open up Big East play. Jay Wright has one of his youngest teams ever and this could be a huge game for the Wildcats. Jermaine Samuels will need to play big, especially when they visit Marquette later this week.
11. Michigan State (10-3) Last Week 12
The Spartans picked up a win despite no Cassius Winston in the lineup. They defeated heavy underdog Western Michigan by thirty-three, which will build their confidence. The Spartans welcome Illinois to town on Thursday before hosting Michigan on Sunday. Two wins this week would mean a jump back into the top ten for sure for Tom Izzo’s crew.
12. Butler (12-1) Last Week 13
The Bulldogs move up a spot on Overtime Heroics rankings after another victory. They held UL-Monroe to just thirty-six points, winning by thirty-one. Sean McDermott and Bryce Nze led the team with ten points each. Butler begins their Big East play against St Johns on the road Tuesday. They then travel home to welcome Creighton on Saturday. Another team on our list that could see a huge jump if they go undefeated this week.
13. Maryland (11-2) Last Week 11
Maryland may have won their game this week, but they did not impress Overtime Heroics in doing so. They played the Bryant Bulldogs at home and started incredibly slow. They picked up the win by fourteen, but as twenty-two point favorites we were incredibly underwhelmed. Maryland will welcome Indiana on Saturday and hopefully, they can clean it up then.
14. West Virginia (10-1) Last Week 18
The Mountaineers had their statement win of the young season against Ohio State. Miles McBridge had a twenty-one point outing as the Mountaineers held the Buckeyes to just fifty-nine points. We may be overhyping West Virginia based off this one victory, but they have a chance to prove they are legitimate. They will be on the road against Kansas. A victory or even a close loss could be huge for proving the doubters wrong about Bob Huggins’s team.
15. Michigan (10-3) Last Week 14
The Wolverines drop to the fifteenth on Overtime Heroics rankings. While we did enjoy them thumping the MA-Lowell River Hawks, we want to see more. Michigan will get that chance this week as they travel to take on their in-state rivals Michigan State. A victory for Juwan Howard’s squad would be huge to open up Big Ten play. A loss could mean a tough road ahead.
16. San Diego State (13-0) Last Week 17
San Diego remains one of the handfuls of NCAA division one programs that are undefeated. We still have some question marks around their lack of competition. Their record, however, is too tough to deny. They defeated Cal Poly by sixteen at home and now will start conference play in the Mountain West. Fresno State should be easy, but Utah State on the road will be their toughest test to date. A victory there could earn them some much deserved “street cred” and move them into the top fifteen.
17. Kentucky (9-3) Last Week 21
Huge win for Coach Calipari, as a loss could have meant no Kentucky on the power rankings. We were incredibly impressed by the play of Tyrese Maxey, who had twenty-seven points in that game. They also defended Jordan Nwora incredibly well, neutralizing him from the game. Kentucky will welcome Missouri on Saturday to open their SEC campaign. This is typically where Coach Cal’s teams turn it on and we hope they do.
18. Virginia (10-2) Last Week 15
Virginia drops a few spots due to other teams picking up big victories. We are still not sold on the defending national champions. After a bad loss to South Carolina, we expected a blowout win over Navy at home. They were nearly eighteen point favorites and only won by nine points. In fact, Navy only got outscored by a single point in the second half. Virginia Tech at home will be the Cavaliers ACC opener. Show us at Overtime Heroics that you can score points.
19. Dayton (10-2) Last Week 16
The Flyers flew low this week and dropped some spots due to others winning bigger games. This comes with the territory of playing in the A10 conference. They defeated Grambling State by twenty-eight, as they should. They open their conference schedule against North Florida. Dayton will need to go near perfect in the A10 to impress Overtime Heroics that is for sure.
20. Penn State (10-2) Last Week 19
The Nittany Lions had a big week on the football field and basketball court. Penn State picked up a blowout win over lowly Cornell by thirty-one points. Due to their lack of competition, they drop a spot. But they will take on Iowa at home, with a spot on this list as the reward for the winner. A loss means dropping off altogether.
21. Florida State (10-2) Last Week 23
Leonard Hamilton’s team took on North Alabama this past week, winning by seventeen. They were twenty-six point favorites, so not an overly impressive win, but a win nonetheless. Florida State plays Georgia Tech Tuesday morning, before traveling to play Louisville Saturday afternoon. Two wins mean a huge rise in the Seminoles stock.
22. Saint Mary’s (13-2) Last Week 25
The AP poll may not love the Gaels, but we are all about them at Overtime Heroics. The Gaels defeated Seattle by twenty-six, led Dan Fotu’s seventeen points. Saint Mary’s opens up West Coast Conference play with two road games. They play in San Francisco on Wednesday and at Pacific on Friday. Two wins mean a continued rise for the Gaels.
23. Iowa (10-3) Last Week NR
The Hawkeyes have rattled off four wins in a row to make it onto Overtime Heroics power rankings. They defeated Kennesaw State by forty-two in their latest game, but we are looking ahead for this Iowa team. Luka Garza will need to be huge when they take on Penn State on the road this week. If he is not then Iowa will leave this list as quickly as they joined it.
24. Wichita State (11-1) Last Week NR
The Shockers are shocking the world right now with only a single loss on the season. With their lone loss coming against West Virginia, we felt it was time to give them their just due. The Shockers have already defeated Oklahoma State on the road, as well as Oklahoma and VCU at home. They kick off AAC play against East Carolina, a game they should win with ease on Wednesday. They then welcome Ole Miss on Saturday, so big week upcoming for Wichita State.
25. Arizona (10-3) Last Week 24
We were very close to removing Arizona altogether, but with no games played the deserve to cling onto the last spot. Arizona will take on their in-state rivals on Saturday after two weeks off. Arizona State is a talented team and they will not be able to start off slow. This is the time for Nico Mannion to prove why he was such a highly-touted freshman. Show Overtime Heroics why you deserve all that hype.
