As another decade closes, it’s always interesting to look back and see how the last 10 years unfolded. There are Top 10 lists aplenty this time of year and, to no ones surprise, Fantasy Hockey will have their’s as well.
Since forwards tend to dominate the upper echelon of top fantasy hockey producers, I decided to split the list up. You will get to read about my Top 10 Fowards, Top 5 Defenseman and Top 5 Goalies.

Without further ado…
Top 10 Fantasy Hockey Forwards
10. Connor McDavid
328 GP / 150 G / 285 A / 435 P / +42 / 122 PPP / 1.33 P/G / 15% SH% / 998 SOG
The only reason Connor McDavid isn’t higher on this list is because he’s only played 4 seasons this decade, current season being his fifth. But what he’s been able to do in that time is incredible. He might not have the point totals, but he leads all players on this list with a 1.33 P/G rate. Three 100+ Point seasons in a row certainly helps, plus the 126 point pace he is currently on.
9. Nicklas Backstrom
680 GP / 170 G / 473 A / 643 P / +51 / 261 PPP / .95 P/G / 11.9% SH% / 1,425 SOG
Top 10 in points, number two in assists and top three in power play points, Nicklas Backstrom one of the most consistent players over the last decade. Being glued to Alexander Ovechkin most of his time definitely helps.
8. Phil Kessel
743 GP / 269 G / 394 A / 663 P / -101 / 248 PPP / .89 P/G / 11% SH% / 2,438 SOG
Phil Kessel has played the most games of all players over this decade. Top six in total points, top four in power play points and top three in shots on goal solidifies Kessel in the top 10 of the decade.
7. Evgeni Malkin
567 GP / 257 G / 397 A / 653 P / +48 / 244 PPP / 1.15 P/G / 13.6% SH% / 1,884 SOG
Evgeni Malkin might be a surprise, for some, at seven. He has one of the lowest games played, second only to McDavid, but his production is worth having him here. He still ranks within top 10 in points and top five in power play points. Among players with at least 560 games played, Malkin is number two at P/G.
6. John Tavares
701 GP / 310 G / 377 A / 687 P / -10 / 217 PPP / .98 P/G / 13.4% SH% / 2,312 SOG
John Tavares sits just outside my top five, but it was close. Coming in at top five in points, third in goals scored and tied for sixth in points per game, Tavares has shown he is an elite level player.
5. Steven Stamkos
617 GP / 332 G / 325 A / 657 P / +37 / 234 PPP / 1.06 P/G / 17.1% SH% / 1,947 Sog
Number two in goals and power play goals. Fourth in points per game (minimum 560 games played) and number one in shooting %, Steven Stamkos is an elite sniper and puts that on display quite often.
4. Claude Giroux
731 GP / 222 G / 491 A / 713 P / +44 / 277 PPP / .98 P/G / 11% SH% / 2.024 SOG
The often overlooked Claude Giroux, has a strong claim to a top five spot. Number one in assists, fourth in total points and first in power play points, Giroux has been a pillar of production in Philadelphia.
3. Alexander Ovechkin
727 GP / 412 G / 307 A / 719 P / +23 / 267 PPP / .99 P/G / 12.6% SH% / 3,264 SOG
The top three gets a little tougher. The last three guys are as elite as they come. I have Alexander Ovechkin at three. First is goals, even strength and power play, third in total points, second in power play points and first in shots on goal. Ovechkin is the epitome of elite goal scoring over the past decade.
2. Patrick Kane
698 GP / 300 G / 455 A / 755 P / +51 / 226 PPP / 1.08 P/G / 12.7% SH% / 2,364 SOG
The top point producer of the decade, Patrick Kane has proved time and again that he is an elite playmaking forward. There isn’t much else to say about him.
1. Sidney Crosby
589 GP / 268 G / 459 A / 727 P / +137 / 235 PPP / 1.23 P/G / 14.3% SH% / 1,872 SOG
Coming it at number one, as much as it pains me to say, is Sidney Crosby. Sid the Kid has been a dominant force since entering the NHL in 2005. Even with his injury history, Crosby has proven to be the benchmark by which all other superstars are compared. Among players with a minimum of 560 games played, Crosby ranks second in assists, total points and even strength points. He also leads all player with a 1.23 point per game average. The Kid shows no signs of slowing down either.
