2019 CFP National Championship

LSU vs Clemson in the National Championship

It all comes down to this. This is what teams work for in the Spring and Summer. They prepare and play for a chance to win a championship. It all comes to a head-on Monday, January 13th. The 2019 CFP National Championship will see the number three seed Clemson Tigers vs. the number one seed LSU Tigers. Both teams are undefeated and have established themselves as the two best teams in college football. However, the College Football Playoff has not seen a one or a three-win the championship before. That will end on Monday as one of these teams, at the end of four quarters, will be able to lift the playoff trophy and be called national champs.

Clemson Tigers

Clemson came into 2019 as the defending champions. The Tigers were overlooked all season because of their weak schedule. As a result, they need to finish undefeated or be left out. Clemson was up to the test and concluded the regular season 12-0. The Tigers won the ACC Atlantic Division for a fifth straight year. Additionally, it was Clemson’s fifth consecutive overall ACC Championship as the Tigers defeated Virginia.

The Tigers earned the three seed in the playoff and played Ohio State in Arizona. Clemson got off to a slow start but never wavered. The Tigers overcame a 16 point deficit and scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:49 left. Clemson, once again, advanced to the national championship. The Tigers hope to win their third championship in the last four years.

LSU Tigers

LSU entered 2019 with expectations of finally getting over the hump and returning to glory. The Tigers got a big win in week two over Texas. LSU followed in week six with a win over Florida. As the calendar turned to November, the Tigers found themselves 8-0. Looming on the schedule was their rivals from Tuscaloosa. LSU had not beaten Alabama since 2011. Quarterback Joe Burrow and the LSU offense ended the losing streak and left Bryant-Denny Stadium with a 46-41 win.

After the triumph, the Tigers won their last three regular-season games to wrap up the SEC West. LSU then steamrolled Georgia to win their first SEC Championship since the 2011 season. As a result, the Tigers clinched the number one seed in the playoff.

LSU traveled back to Atlanta to face Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl. The Tigers, once again, made the win look easy as they defeated Oklahoma 63-28. By advancing to the national championship, LSU returns to the same venue where they lost the 2011 national championship. The Tigers hope this visit to New Orleans culminates with a championship game win.

2019 CFP National Championship (Players to Watch)

Each team has offenses that can put up video game numbers. It all starts with the quarterback position on both sides. Joe Burrow leads the LSU offense, while Trevor Lawrence anchors the Clemson offense. Heisman trophy winner Burrow is coming off an eight touchdown performance against Oklahoma. In contrast, sensational sophomore Lawrence accounted for three total touchdowns against Ohio State.

While a shootout is possible Monday night, there is a potential for a defensive struggle. Both defenses have shown they can shut down offenses and blow out their opponents. The pressure is on the defensive coordinators to have a game plan to shut down the opposing offenses.

2019 CFP National Championship (Matchups)

The 2019 CFP National Championship could not be more of a toss-up. Either team’s offense can explode and score in the 30s or 40s. On the other hand, both team’s defenses can shut down the others and turn this game into a defensive struggle. Up and down the roster, the talent levels are even. If there is one advantage that stands out, it would be the coaches.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has been in this position before. While Swinney has experience in championship games, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has not. However, Orgeron has shown this season no stage is too big for him. If Orgeron comes up with an A-plus game plan, LSU stands in good shape to win.

Official Prediction

If I had to pick a winner, I think I am going to roll with LSU. While Clemson did prove themselves against Ohio State, I do not think anyone can stop LSU. Even though I am picking LSU, I would not be surprised if Clemson found a way to win this game. As mentioned earlier, LSU has not been to a championship game since 2011. Additionally, the Tigers have not won a championship since 2007.

On the other hand, Clemson is hoping to become the new dynasty. A win for Clemson would be their third in the last four years. With a win on Monday, paired with two wins over Alabama, there could be changing of the guard from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Clemson, South Carolina. The 2019 CFP National Championship goes down on Monday, January 13th, at 7:00 pm central. The game will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Tune in to find out how this college football season will end.
