Hector Rondon: Newest Addition to the Diamondbacks

Welcome To Arizona

On Wednesday, January 6, 2020, the Arizona Diamondbacks made a deal with 31-year old pitcher Hector Rondon. Arizona was looking to add a power arm to the bullpen before they signed Hector to a one-year contract with a team option for 2021. The amount of the deal includes guaranteed $3 million for the season, broken down by a $2.5 million salary in 2020 with a $500,000 buyout should the team not pick up his option.  If they do keep him for 2021, he could make up to $5 million with incentives for the second year.

The Newest Addition to the Bullpen

This right-handed pitcher is coming onto a team that is thirsty for a playoff spot this upcoming season. Could Hector be the much-needed arm in the Diamondbacks bullpen? Rondon would be paired with Archie Bradley, Andrew Chafin and many more during the 2020 season. The Venezuelan-born reliever has been a part of the Astros winning teams in 2018 and 2019, not to mention being a part of the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs in 2016.

A Successful 2019 Season

Rondon has the experience to provide stability to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.  The right-handed arm pitched in 62 games, finishing the season with a 3-2 record and 48 strikeouts. Rondon ended the season with a 3.71 ERA, 60.2 IP, and 1.25 WHIP. Looking at his numbers the past season, Rondon has the potential to be great in 2020. However, it may leave room for error in the bullpen as well. The Diamondbacks have the hunger to be in the playoffs this season, but will Rondon be able to come through when needed? The last thing fans would want is an implosion during a playoff chase.

Possible Diamond in the Rough

Though it is too early to tell what this veteran will bring to the team, it is also not too early to begin making assumptions. At times, some signings will end up being diamonds in the rough. A perfect example is Ketel Marte, who was acquired from the Mariners in 2017. The Diamondbacks’ bullpen hasn’t been top-notch and has often lost games for this team. A solid season from Rendon can improve the current staff with leadership and experience this team needs heading into 2020.
