Royals Announce Game Times, Ballpark Changes for 2020

Kauffman Stadium during one of the Royals game in 2014

The Kansas City Royals have announced game times for this coming 2020 campaign. Regular season games will start on March 26th against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Afterward, they will head to Detroit to play a short two-game series – one being on ESPN – then return to Kansas City for their home opener on Thursday, April 2nd against the Seattle Mariners. First Pitch is at 3:05 pm Central Time.

One point to note with the first eight games: each will be played in the afternoon. This seems reasonable knowing the weather in Chicago, Detroit, and Kansas City in late March and early April could be a little chilly for baseball. You can see the full schedule, here.

Royals New Home Game Start Times

The Royals have new home game start times for the 2020 compared to recent years. In 2019, most games would begin 15 minutes after the top of the hour. However, in 2020, you will need to be in your seat 5-10 minutes earlier to catch the first pitch.

The Royals announced Wednesday, January 9th, that they will begin 77 of their 81 games at home at five minutes past the hour. Here is what the standard times at Kauffman Stadium will be:

Monday-Friday: 7:05pm

Saturday: 6:05pm

Sunday: 1:05pm

Royals replace foul poles prior to 2020 campaign

The team also announced that they will be changing the foul poles at Kauffman Stadium for the first time in 47 years. This is because they are extending the protective netting before the team’s first game on April 2nd.

Currently, the netting extends to the dugouts, but several other teams around the league have already extended the netting past that point following the incidents of fans being struck by foul balls. The move also comes after an announcement from Commissioner Rob Manfred that all teams are planning to extend their netting for the upcoming season. The foul poles that are being removed are the original to the stadium which opened in 1973. The Royals announced a piece of them are going to be put in the Royals Hall of Fame, which is located in left field.
