The No.19 Michigan Wolverines (11-4) defeated the Purdue Boilermakers (9-7), 84-78 in double overtime. Zavier Simpson led the way with 22 points, 9 assists, and 3 rebounds. In addition to Simpson’s heroic effort, Jon Teske added 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Simpson seemed unphased despite a monster performance from Purdue’s Trevion Williams, who led his team with 36 points and 20 rebounds. In last night’s game, it was clear that Simpson was an extension of Head Coach Juwan Howard on the floor.

Throughout the game and even when Purdue took the lead in the second half (15:37), Simpson never lost his composure. He helped lead his team to victory by running the offense, calling out picks on defense and hustling on both ends of the floor.

Michigan was able to survive Purdue’s attack and Williams’ double-double because of their balanced scoring. Clearly the Wolverines struggled to space the floor at the beginning of the game but their depth helped.

Michigan Wolverines: All for one

Simpson (22 points), Teske (18 points), Franz Wagner (15 points), and David Dejulius (11 points) all scored double-digits. On the flip side, only four Boilermakers scored more than eight points.

Purdue (31.6 percent) and Michigan (24.1 percent) both struggled to shoot from behind the arc. However, the Wolverines shot 47 percent from the floor and held the Boilermakers to 40.8 percent.

On the other hand, Purdue put together a solid gameplan to attack the paint but it wasn’t enough due to their lack of depth. Williams was unstoppable and gave the Michigan frontcourt a handful.

Unfortunately, Williams didn’t receive a lot of help from the rest of his teammates. Eric Hunter Jr. (10 points) and Isaiah Thompson (14 points) were the only players who scored in double figures alongside Williams.

Williams shot 57 percent from the floor but he started to run out of gas during the first overtime. Michigan amped up the help defense as the game continued to wind down.
