Florida Panthers Trade Targets

With the trade deadline fast approaching, it is time to look at potential Florida Panthers trade targets. The Panthers are currently just 1 point out of the last playoff spot. A little more offensive punch would go a long way in pushing this team over the top. The Panthers have little more then 100K of cap space to work with. To make any additions to this team, money will need to go the other way. A little bit of creativity will be needed by the Panthers, but one name makes more sense then the others.

Out – Mark Pysyk $2.73 Million (1 year left, UFA)

The Florida Panthers have quite a bit of defensive depth, and as such, Mark Pysyk has been asked to play forward on more than a few occasions this season. Pysyk has put up a modest 3 goals and 4 assists in 33 games this season. He can bring a physical game, but for his price ($2.73 cap hit), he is not bringing enough value to the Panthers. He can be replaced defensively with the Panthers depth, so he should be next out the door. Only having 1 year before UFA also makes Pysyk attractive. If a team wants a 5-6 defensemen with no commitment, Pysyk is your guy.

Target 1 – Alex Iafallo

The Panthers trade deadline targets should included L.A. Forward Alex Iafallo. This is a trade target that works for a few reasons. First, trading Pysyk for Iafallo would actually lower the Panthers cap hit by around 200K, so the money in this case works. A draft pick would surly be included to help the Kings out. Iafallo is a UFA after the 2020-2021 season, so he would be around Florida for one more year before becoming a UFA. Iafallo has 9 goals and 17 assists so far this year, so he certainly has some offense. He is also sitting at -2 for his plus/minus, very respectable for being on a bad team.

Target 2 – Ondrej Kase

Potential Florida Panthers trade targets should include Ondrej Kase of Anaheim. He is in his mid twenty’s and has a cap hit of $2.6 million, which again is lower than Pysyk. He is in the 2nd year of a 3 year $7.8 million contract, which will end with Kase being a RFA. Kase has put up 5 goals and 17 points so far this season. He had a career high 38 points in 2017-18, so a push back to that form would be huge for the Panthers. Kase is not fully living up to his contract, so being moved to a better team might increase his production through better line-mates.

Looking over what is available, moving Mark Pysyk and a 2nd round pick to L.A. for Alex Iafallo would be a fair trade for both sides. Doing this now would allow L.A. to then flip Pysyk to another team for more draft picks before the deadline. A trade along these lines is what I would target if I were the Panthers GM.
