The Patriots had a disappointing season by their standards after being eliminated in the wildcard round to the Tennessee Titans. Here are the New England Patriots Position Grades:
Tom Brady looked alright this season, but he was not the same as past seasons. He threw 4,000 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He was still one of the smartest quarterbacks in the NFL they just did not have the weapons or the offensive line this season. Jarret Stidham was also a decent backup this season and will learn from the best.
James Develin got hurt at the beginning of the season which he was put onto IR. Jakob Johnson was also put on IR which left the Patriots with no fullback. They put Elandon Roberts at fullback and he did well. He scored a touchdown and filled in well even though he was a linebacker on the team.
Sony Michel in his sophomore season did well having seven touchdowns for 912 rushing yards. Rex Burkhead also was a great receiving back and rushing back having three touchdowns. James White was a great receiving back this season as well having five touchdowns and 645 receiving yards. Overall there was a lot of depth at the receiver position which is why they are an A-.
The tight end this season was not good. Ben Watson, Matt LaCosse, and Ryan Izzo had less receiving yards then Mohamed Sanu with 520 receiving yards. Overall this tight ends group was poor and I expect the Patriots to make a move at tight end this offseason.
Julian Edelman did great this season with over 1000 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. Sanu did alright with 520 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Jakobi Meyers and N’Keal Harry did well for there a rookie season, but overall the receivers were not spectacular.
Isaiah Wynn was not a terrible blocker but is still young. Brady was sacked a lot this season. Marshall Newhouse did not do well as a blocker is getting older. Marcus Cannon was alright for the season as he always is. Overall the offensive line did not block well.
Joe Thuney did alright did season and had many key blocks for the Patriots. Outside of him, there is not a lot of key blockers. Thuney was the only good guard for the Patriots this season.
The defense was amazing this season and they were the best in the NFL. John Simon had four sacks and 28 tackles. He is a veteran defensive end and can help Chase Winovich progress through his career. Winovich had a great year for a rookie, he wracked up 5.5 sacks and 12 solo tackles. Overall the defensive ends had a great season and were a major part of the defense.
The interior line was good this season which helped the defense out a lot. Adam Butler was a great player this year who has eight tackles for loss, six sacks, and eight quarterback hits. Danny Shelton also played well with three sacks and two tackles for loss.
The linebackers were spectacular this season and we’re truly amazing. Jamie Collins Sr. revived his career with seven sacks, 57 tackles, and three interceptions. Dont’a Hightower was also amazing with 47 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and eight tackles for loss. I cannot mention those two without mentioning Kyle Van Noy who had 41 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss.
The cornerbacks had arguably two top ten cornerbacks this season. Stephon Gilmore is in the races for defensive player of the year with six interceptions. J.C Jackson and Jonathan Jones are two great young cornerbacks for the Patriots. Jason McCourty brings that veteran presence to the Patriots as well.
The safety was good this year but they are aging players. Patrick Chung had 38 tackles and overall is a top safety. Devin McCourty is also a top player for the Patriots who had five interceptions and 46 tackles this past season. Duron Harmon is also a good young safety and will progress well behind McCourty and Chung.
Stephen Gostkowski got hurt early in the season with a season-ending injury. Nick Folk stepped up and did pretty well. Folk made 14 out of 17 of his field goals and truly showed he is still a good kicker. He was a trustworthy kicker for New England and will get a major contract next year.
Jake Bailey was drafted in the fifth round this season and he replaced Ryan Allen. His longest punt this season was 65 yards punt and he had 44.9 yards per punt this season.
