Let me start with, Jalen Hurts was a barely draftable prospect at the beginning of the year and is now one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2020 class.

Jalen Hurts Strengths

What do you call a quarterback that can run and throw? A dual-threat quarterback. Lamar Jackson is the front runner for the MVP and Kyler Murray was the first-overall pick in last year’s draft. The NFL is a copycat league. You see Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray have success at quarterback, so you might want to take the risk on Jalen Hurts then.

Hurts is a dynamic athlete with the ball in his hands. He has great lateral agility in the pocket and in the open field. Worth mentioning, Hurts has great breakaway speed from the quarterback position. The speed and his athletic ability help him escaped the pocket. It makes him also throw the ball off the run. Hurts throw off the run has improved since his Alabama days.

When Hurts played for Alabama, he was a good athlete but since transferring he has only improved as a passer and as a runner. Hurts has shown flashes of greatness with the improvement of his game. He has a great deep ball throw. His timing with receivers has improved a lot since transferring, and one of the biggest issues I thought he had at Alabama was his throw velocity. Now, Hurts can fit the ball in tight windows unlike in previous seasons.

Jalen Hurts Weaknesses

I personally think if a team takes a risk on Jalen Hurts, he will not disappoint. But, of course, there are weaknesses with every player. Hurts has improved since his Alabama days but he is not elite, YET.

Hurts throwing motion and his release are just too slow. He also, for some reason, has a tendency to lob every deep ball he throws. In the NFL you can not get away with throw lob passes and expect them not to be picked off.

If an NFL coach can sit down with Jalen Hurts and get him to stop being a one-read quarterback, he could be so dangerous in the NFL. Hurts has a tendency to lock on to his target and if he is not open he just takes off and sometimes he also forces the throw. In the NFL, that is going to lead to turnovers.

In the ‘big game’, Hurts has a tendency to struggle. He tries to do too much which gets him in trouble. He tries to extend the play when he should not. Instead of trying to extend the play with a pass, Hurts keeps his head down and tries to do it himself.

Jalen Hurts Projection

Jalen Hurts is a dual-threat quarterback with fantastic athleticism. From his Alabama days, he has improved as a passer but can still improve even more. He is a work in progress but when he has the ball in his hands, he is elite. Hurts will be a 2-3 round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
