Kansas City Royals re-sign Alex Gordon to a one-year deal worth $4 million, according to Jeffery Flanagan of MLB.com. A corresponding move, the Royals have designated P Heath Fillmyer for assignment to make room for Gordon on the 40-man roster.

Gordon, who turns 36 next month, became a free agent this past November when KC declined its half of his $23 million mutual option for the 2020 campaign.

Gordon signed just in time too. Fan-Fest takes place this weekend at the Kansas City Convention Center. The Nebraska-born outfielder is most known for helping the Royals win the 2015 World Series for their first title since 1985.

Gordon has played his entire MLB career with the Royals after he was the second overall pick in the 2005 draft out of the University of Nebraska. In his career, Gordon is hitting .258 with 186 Home Runs and 738 RBIs. Also, he is a three-time All-Star and has won seven Gold Gloves in his career.

Gordon also is waiving his 10-and-5 no trade clause, Dayton Moore says. “Gordon wants to win more than anything else. And this is not a situation where he thinks this is his final year. But we’re not even considering (the possibility of trading him) right now.”

With Gordon coming back, this makes the outfield starters look clear with Gordon holding up his end in left field. This now puts utility player Whit Merrifield in CF, and Hunter Dozier in RF. Brett Phillips and Bubba Starling (both who are out of options) will compete for a reserve role in the outfield. However, other names in the mix are Ryan McBroom who is able to play first base and outfield. Along with many others, such as rookie Nick Heath who has spent the offseason playing in the Dominican Winter League, Prospect Khalil Lee who spent last year in Double-A Northwest Arkansas who could be ready during the 2020 season.
