Notable Plays of the Week: LeBron at Center and Booker’s Passing

In these notable play videos, I plan on selecting a couple of plays from the past week, day, or month that may have fallen off the “Top 10” radar and breaking down what makes them particularly notable.

Booker’s Passing

In the first play, Devin Booker throws an assist to Kelly Oubre Jr., but Booker actually misses a couple of other opportunities. Out of 286 players that have played at least 500 minutes, Booker is 23rd in assists per game at 6.3. His passer rating of 6 (out of 10) which is about 60th in the league. In other words, he’s a fine passer, but he could be better. This pass illustrates that.

Korver’s Driving Layup

The second play is a Kyle Korver driving layup out of the pick-and-roll. It’s honestly one of the more boring layups you’ll see. However, this is literally Korver’s only driving layup this year. Watch how Giannis draws so much attention as the roll man where he ranks in the 93rd percentile according to Basketball Index’s talent grades.

Small-Ball Lakers

The third play looks at a frenetic defensive possession from a small-ball Lakers lineup. Against the Nets, the Lakers ran a LeBronDudleyRondo-KCP-Kuzma lineup for the first time this season. In their seven minutes, they were +12. Watch how Rondo especially flies around the court as LeBron provides rim protection.

Blazers’ Miscommunication

The fourth of the notable plays showcases a PorzingisHardaway Jr. inverse pick-and-roll against Ariza and Lillard. Through a combination of Lillard’s poor defensive abilities and the fact that it was the first game Ariza played with the Blazers, they miscommunicate leaving Porzingis open for an easy dunk. In my analysis, I reference a pick-and-roll defensive video from bendhoops.com.

Gilgeous-Alexander Pump Fakes

This week’s notable plays ends with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander faking and baking his way to an assist. He burns Cam Reddish twice in the play before easily faking out Damian Jones. This leaves Danilo Gallinari wide-open for a three. While not quite as pretty, this is reminiscent of a Ja Morant play from earlier this year.
