Dallas Mavericks: Dwight Powell Injury

Dwight Powell is out for the season. This is a huge blow to the Dallas Mavericks. He played the vital role of being a “diver” in a spacious offense. His ability to roll to the basket has opened the floor up for shooters in the corner. Many fans were not satisfied with Powell’s production throughout the season in terms of rebounding and defense.

Over the last month, there has been debate over upgrading the center position. With Powell now out for the remainder of the season, the Mavericks had to search for a new center.

Dwight Powell Out, Willie Cauley-Stein In

It was reported Friday night that Willie Cauley-Stein was traded to the Mavericks. This is an excellent addition. He will thrive in pick & roll scenarios with Luka Doncic and the rest of the guards. When not screening, he will be excellent to put in the “dunker’s” position on the baseline for lobs. It should be expected that minutes will be split between Cauley-Stein, Porzingis, and Kleber for the four and five positions.

Before facing the Jazz on Saturday night, the Mavericks had matchups with the Clippers and Trail Blazers. The Mavericks suffered a hard loss on Tuesday against LA but bounced back against the Trailblazers. The Clippers remain the only team in the West that has consistently given Dallas issues. Their length and depth of wing players make it very difficult on the Mavericks’ perimeter-based offense.

The Mavericks only had to give up a second-round pick to acquire Cauley-Stein. This trade will pay off for the Mavericks, Cauley-Stein is currently averaging around eight points and six rebounds. His production will likely go up in the dynamic offense to about fourteen points and eight rebounds, with a block or two. It will certainly be interesting to watch his growth on the team.

Mamba Mentality

As a fan of basketball since childhood, it broke my heart to hear the tragic incident involving Kobe Bryant and would be beside myself to not give my respects. I am praying for his family and all those involved. He was among the best to ever play the game. May the “Mamba Mentality” live forever.
