Team Picks: UFC Champions at the End of 2020

Image for Team Picks: UFC Champions at the End of 2020

When the new year kicked in, just a few weeks ago, we decided it was time for our team to yet again show off our perfect accuracy, foresight, and clairvoyance. Which we have gained through our immense UFC knowledge, or maybe (more than likely), this is just a delusion that will be dispelled by the year’s end.

Either way, only time will tell which of the above statements is true. So, with that in mind sit back, relax and feel free to laugh at our picks for the fighters that will hold UFC gold when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, 2021.

Women’s Strawweight

I believe that 2020 is the year in which Rose Namajunas (8-4) will reclaim the status of strawweight queen. I see her fighting twice this year. Her first fight will avenge her loss to Jessica Andrade (20-7), and her second will be for the strawweight gold.

  • Daniel – Rose Namajunas
  • Lewis – Joanna Jedrzejczyk
  • Aiden – Tatiana Suarez
  • Jack – Weili Zhang
  • James – Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Women’s Flyweight

I will keep this one short and sweet, the only way this belt changes hands, this year, is if Valentina Shevchenko (18-3) either vacates or is stripped.

  • Daniel – Valentina
  • Lewis – Valentina
  • Aiden – Valentina
  • Jack – Valentina
  • James – Valentina

After the announcement that Henry Cejudo (15-2) would no longer be the king of the flyweights, I see Deiveson Figueiredo (17-1) besting Joseph Benavidez (28-5) to become the UFC’s third flyweight champion.

  • Daniel – Deiveson Figueiredo
  • Jack – Joesph Benavidez
  • Aiden – Joseph Benavidez
  • Jack – Brandon Moreno
  • James – Jospeh Benavidez

Women’s Bantamweight

By the end of 2020, I believe we will have a new baddest women on the planet, and her name is Valentina Shevchenko.

Amanda Nunes (19-4) has been a dominant champion but her time is up. I think Valentina will move back up in weight and avenge her two losses, becoming a two-weight world champion.

  • Daniel – Valentina
  • Lewis – Valentina
  • Aiden – Amanda Nunes
  • Jack – Amanda Nunes
  • James – Amanda Nunes

2020 will be the year that the “King of Cringe”, Henry Cejudo, is finally dethroned and forced to bend the knee to Aljamain Sterling (18-3). After being dethroned, Cejudo will take his rightful position as court jester.

  • Daniel – Aljamain Sterling
  • Lewis – Petr Yan
  • Aiden – Cory Sandhagen
  • Jack – Cory Sanhagen
  • James – Henry Cejudo

Women’s Featherweight

As Paul Heyman would say; ‘this is not a prediction, this is a spoiler’, Amanda Nunes will retain her featherweight title.

  • Daniel – Amanda Nunes
  • Lewis – Amanda Nunes
  • Aiden – Amanda Nunes
  • Jack – Amanada Nunes
  • James – Amanda Nunes

Alexander Volkanovski (21-1) has looked unstoppable since joining the UFC. It will be a big surprise if his unbeaten run does not extend throughout, and beyond, 2020.

  • Daniel – Volkanovski
  • Lewis – Volkanovski
  • Aiden – Volkanovski
  • Jack – Volkanovski
  • James – Max Holloway

Hopefully 2020 will, finally, give MMA fans the gift we all deserve, Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) vs Tony Ferguson (25-3). This will, without a doubt, be Khabib’s toughest test to date but one he overcomes, retaining his title in the process.

  • Daniel – Khabib
  • Lewis – Khabib
  • Aiden – Khabib
  • Jack – Khabib
  • James – Dustin Poirier

2020 will be a big year for the Edward brothers. I see Fabian working his way up the Bellator rankings and Leon Edwards (18-3) becoming UFC champion.

  • Daniel – Leon Edwards
  • Lewis – Kamaru Usman
  • Aiden – Kamaru Usman
  • Jack – Jorge Masvidal
  • James – Kamaru Usman

After coming so close to championship gold multiple times, it has become a popular opinion amongst MMA fans, and pundits, that Yoel Romero (13-4) will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, UFC fighter to never hold gold.

However, I don’t believe that this opinion will come to fruition, because Romero is my pick to be the middleweight king come the end of the year.

  • Daniel – Yoel Romero
  • Lewis – Israel Adesanya
  • Aiden – Israel Adesanya
  • Jack – Paulo Costa
  • James – Israel Adesanya

Jon Jones (25-1) will retain his light-heavyweight crown throughout 2020, because at light-heavyweight, just like Thanos, Jones is inevitable.

  • Daniel – Jon Jones
  • Lewis – Jon Jones
  • Aiden – Jon Jones
  • Jack – Jon Jones
  • James – Jon Jones

After regaining his title, I don’t see Stipe Miocic (19-3) losing it again anytime soon. Some people might make an argument for Francis Ngannou (14-3), and with his power he is impossible to write off, but I think Stipe has his number.

  • Daniel – Stipe Miocic
  • Lewis – Jon Jones
  • Aiden – Francis Ngannou
  • Jack – Jon Jones
  • James – Stipe Miocic

How many of our picks will be proven right? Will we get a huge surprise and have a currently unranked fighter as a champion by the years end? Only time will tell, but no matter what happens I’m positive about one thing, this is going o be one hell of a year of fights.
