Call of Duty League Launch Weekend Recap

After much preparation and many roster changes, the Call of Duty League is finally up and running. In February of 2019, Activision announced the intention to create a city-based league for Call of Duty. It would be in the same vein as their Overwatch League, which has been wildly successful through its first few seasons.

The first season of CDL would launch in January 2020 and feature 12 teams from around the United States, Canada, and Europe. Though the league and rosters are all new to fans for the newest game, Modern Warfare, there remains a lot of familiar faces from previous seasons of professional Call of Duty. None more famous than Seth “Scump” Abner, who is widely considered the best player in the world. Scump was signed to play for the Chicago Huntsmen in the CDL. The Huntsmen are owned and run by the popular esports organization, NRG.

Opening Weekend

Through opening weekend, the Huntsmen proved themselves to be one of the best teams in the league without hesitation. Dropping only a single map through both of their matches, Chicago defeated Dallas Empire 3-1. As well as a 3-0 victory over Optic Gaming Los Angeles. The second match was much anticipated, as Optic founder and former CEO Hector Rodriguez left Optic to run NRG last year. The Huntsmen showed no mercy, as they wiped the floor with the new Optic squad, showing that the real Optic team is no longer under the name.

Only one other team managed to lose only one map through both matches on launch weekend. It was the other most popular team in the league. Atlanta Faze also went 2-0, dropping only one map through both matches to tie Chicago’s overall points and record. Atlanta defeated Dallas 3-0, moving them to 0-2 on the weekend, one of four teams to do so. As well as defeating the New York Subliners 3 maps to 1, a team that also fell into the 0-2 bracket, as they had already lost to London the day before.

Launch weekend has come to an end, with 4 teams each finishing 2-0, 1-1. and 0-2. Teams look evenly matched, so as fans, we can expect an exciting upcoming season. The CDL continues Saturday, February 8th with a tournament-style weekend in London.
