On March 21st at UFC London, featherweight contender Mike Grundy will look to make it 2-0 in the promotion as he takes on UFC veteran Makwan Amirkhani. Mike comes from a strong and very underrated gym in team Kaobon, training along ide top UFC contender Darren Till, as well as heavyweight Tom Aspinall, who will make his UFC debut alongside Grundy on March’s 21st.
Grundy has an impressive pro MMA record of 12-1 and most recently had a great second-round TKO finish over Nad Narimani back in March of 2019. That was at the same arena he will be competing at in this upcoming bout. Makwan Amirkhani is a big name within the featherweight division and is a tough test for any fighter. A win for Grundy would boost him towards the rankings and definitely give him the recognition that he deserves as a serious prospect amongst the wave of UK talent within the UFC right now.
Question – Firstly, how do you prepare yourself mentally as the fight gets closer and what are your emotions on fight night when it comes?
Mike’s Answer – “I think It’s just very important you remember why you started to do the sport, it was because it was fun, I keep that element in my prep leading into my fight I love every minute of it so I go out there and enjoy what I do, that keeps me relaxed”
Question – What do you make of your opponent Makwan Amirkhani’s skillset and how it matches up with yours, do you study your opponents if so to what extent?
Mike’s Answer – “Makwan has a good skillset, I think his strength is wrestling but I think my wrestling is stronger. I watch my opponent but not too much, I concentrate on what I’m going to do in the fight”
Question – How much attention do you pay to all of the contenders in the featherweight division, do you see all the fights just as a fan anyway or do you not bother paying attention?
Mike’s Answer – “I do watch the featherweight division, it’s important to keep an eye on who could be potential future fights”
Question – Obviously you have the confidence that you could beat them all but is there anyone specifically that you’d love to fight in the division?
Mike’s Answer- “I am very confident I beat anyone in my division. My aim is to be in the top ten by the end of 2020”
Question – After your upcoming fight, how active are you looking to stay in 2019 providing you come out of the fight healthy?
Mike’s Answer – “In 2020 I want to be active, 3-4 fights this year if possible”
