The Patriots traded away a seventh-round pick for a young Kyle Van Noy and a sixth-round pick. Should the Patriots re-sign or let go of Van Noy this offseason?

Kyle Van Noy Backstory

Kyle Van Noy lived in Reno, Nevada, where he began to assert himself as a tough, hard-hitting football player. He got a scholarship to Brigham Young University and had a chance to have his dreams become true when he played in college. At the end of his senior season, Van Noy overall wracked up 25 sacks, 61.5 tackles for loss, and seven interceptions. After an outstanding college career at Brigham Young University, the Lions took a chance on Van Noy in the 2014 draft.

Journey to New England

The Lions tried to use Van Noy at many positions on the football field, but he was not improving, nor was he playing at an average level. The Lions traded Van Noy and a seventh-round pick for a sixth in return. He was mainly traded to the Patriots because the Lions already had many linebackers, and they wanted to save cap space for next season. Van Noy’s seasons with the Patriots was ruthless. He wracked up 16.5 sacks, 154 solo tackles, and 35 quarterback hits. The Patriots won this trade overall with the Lions, but it was a good move by both teams.

Van Noy is going to want a good portion of the cap space. This could lead to many troubles because there are a significant amount of good players the Patriots will have to let go of this offseason. I believe Van Noy should not be one of them. He has been a leader on and off the football field for many young linebackers on the Patriots. Van Noy is truly a pass rusher and puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback. At the same time, he is terrific at pass coverage and plays it as a cornerback would. Overall I believe the Patriots should resign Kyle Van Noy unless he wants such an absurd amount of money that we are unable to resign him this offseason.
