The Seattle Mariners gave outfielder Carlos Gonzalez a chance to win a roster spot as they signed him to a deal that includes a Spring Training invite.

Carlos “CarGo” Gonzalez, a player who back in the day brought immense power and leadership to the Rockies has now signed a minor-league deal with the Seattle Mariners. This deal also includes an invitation to Spring Training for the 2020 season. Will CarGo be able to pull off a spot on the 40 man roster before the season begins?

The Struggle of 2019

As many know, Gonzalez had a tough season last year after being cut from both the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. Although Gonzalez made an effort to produce at a high level throughout the season, the 34-year-old was unable to keep the starting position handed to him by the managers of both teams. This lead to the former All-Star being job-less for more than half of the 2019 season and a free agent this past winter.

2019 STATS

Throughout the 2019 season Gonzalez had 145 at-bats with 21 runs, 29 hits, and 10 runs batted in. CarGo’s batting avg. ended at .200; not the best considering this was a player whose career batting avg. is .285. Could it have been the lack of spring training that crushed the potential to be great in 2019?

A New Beginning

Gonzalez’s early signing before spring training begins will come in handy, giving him the advantage to get his rhythm back in motion. The veteran not only brings power to the line-up but also leadership that is needed within the Seattle clubhouse. Now that Haniger will potentially be gone for a good portion of the season, it will give Gonzalez an opportunity to step up and land a major league spot prior to Opening Day.

For the time being it is all about prepping for the start of the 2020 season. Could this be the comeback year for this 34-year-old veteran that struggled in 2019? Gonzalez was ready to start the process and intended to sign with a team earlier in the year for the upcoming season. Will the Mariners be the team to give the veteran a chance to return to Vintage CarGo form? The only way to find out is by staying tuned for the upcoming 2020 MLB season.
