Who Will Step Up in the Auburn Secondary?

Auburn will replace all but one member of their secondary in 2020. Of the five members of the 2019 Auburn starting secondary, only Christian Tutt will be a Tiger in 2020. However, there is a good bit of talent and experience left on the roster. Several young defensive backs will make a major impact in 2020.

Coaching

The new faces do not just include players. Auburn lost its secondary coach, Marcus Woodson, to Florida state in 2019. As a result of this departure, Auburn hired Al Pogue to assist Wesley Mcgriff in coaching the defensive backs. They will have their hands full this season filling the void left by the veterans from 2019’s secondary, as several key role players are poised to step up in 2020.

Cornerbacks

Noah Igbinoghine and Javaris Davis will be gone in 2020. Christian Tutt will be the only returning corner with an SEC start. Still, there will be several players who provided depth in 2019 poised to break out in 2020.

Roger McCreary is a prime candidate to break out this season. He led the team in pass breakups with 11. This was good enough for sixth in the conference. Even though he played sparingly in 2019 he produced well and showed potential to handle a bigger role this season. McCreary displayed good fundamentals in man coverage, along with a willingness to make tackles in space. When he cleans his game up more he will be an invaluable member of the secondary in 2020.

Safeties

In 2019 Auburn had veterans Daniel Thomas and Jeremiah Dinson anchoring the secondary from the safety positions. This year, however, they will not be there. This leaves a dangerous void in the defensive backfield. As a result, someone will have to step up. Look for junior Smoke Monday to step up. he played a major role this season and looks to lock down a starting spot this season.

Auburn is in a position familiar to seasons past. This is because they are retooling, not rebuilding. 2020 will feature several new defensive stepping up for the Tigers in a big way, and once again anchoring a strong defense.
