Georgia Bulldogs: Who Will Be the Starting Quarterback?

The Georgia Bulldogs now have a three-way competition for their starting quarterback spot. Who will end up with the job?

Sophomore¬†D’Wan Mathis¬†has been officially cleared to play. This move gives the Georgia Bulldogs a three-way competition for their open quarterback spot. Mathis has the talent to win the job. However, his lack of experience could cause him to lose out.

Mathis wasn’t sitting around all season, even though he wasn’t cleared for contact. He got a lot of time in running the scout team offense. There should be very little rust for him to knock off, and he should be in the mix as soon as practice starts.

The two quarterbacks that Mathis will be competing against are former three-star recruit Jamie Newman and four-star early enrollee Carson Beck. Mathis is a former four-star recruit in his own right. So there is a lot of talent in this competition.

Newman has a leg up in the competition. He has played in 19 games and started for the Deamon Deacons last season. In his twelve starts, he amassed 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and completed 60.9 percent of his passes.

Beck is no slouch, either. In his time at Mandarin High School, he amassed 5,389 yards, 59 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, and completed 54.3 percent of his passes. He was also one of the top ten quarterbacks in this year’s recruiting cycle.

Newman Still the Favorite

With all that said, I still believe that the position is Newman’s to lose. He has the experience and the ability to run Georgia’s new offense. Spring practice starts March 17th, so we will have an answer soon for who will be the starter this season.

Regardless of who wins the job, one thing is for sure Georgia is in good hands. All three of these quarterbacks have the capability to lead the Bulldogs where they want to go. Especially under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
