Week three was a much different week for the Tampa Bay Vipers in some aspects, while the exact same in others. This week when the Vipers took on the Houston Roughnecks they went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the league. The Vipers even had two chances in the final five minutes to tie the game and both times fell short. Although they still lost and fall to 0-3 on the season, this was the first game they showed that they can win some games if they play like this more often. Without further ado here are your week three Vipers studs and duds.
QB Quinton Flowers
Flowers once again outplayed the Vipers starting quarterback Cornelius and the only thing stopping Flowers from an even bigger game was the head coach Marc Trestman. He had 15% more competition percentage and had a quarterback rating of 93.1 compared to Cornelius 68.3. Flowers has shown he is a better Quarterback and even PJ Walker starting quarterback from the Houston squad said post-game that he was wondering why the Vipers did not play Flowers more.
WR Jalen Tolliver
Tolliver had a very nice performance with eight catches for 104 yards. With the lack of solid quarterback play for the Vipers all season long this is quite the accomplishment. He also leads the team in targets with 13 on Saturday, showing he was open more times than his fellow receivers.
CB Anthoula Kelly
Kelly gave up an 84-yard touchdown, also gave up 11-yard catch on 2nd and 12. on the very next play he got called for defensive pass interference and gave up the first down on third down. He was a stud last week and was the clear cut worst player on the field this week for the Vipers.
QB Taylor Cornelius
Cornelius is the third-best quarterback on this team and somehow continues to take first-team reps. As I mentioned above while praising Flowers I have already spoken on the negatives of Cornelius. His 68.3 passer rating and his poor timing of interceptions are consistent. Although you of course never want to throw interceptions Cornelius almost always makes those mistakes in the red zone.
