Make way for a new entry to the “Upset of the Year” shortlist.
Underdog Janet Todd shook up the ONE Championship landscape with a split decision win over Stamp Fairtex to claim the Super Series atomweight world title in ONE: King of the Jungle, Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The main event of the stacked ONE fight card held at the Lion City ended up as a surefire classic – and a stunner – as the American bet took the best shots of the Thai sensation while dishing out pinpoint strikes of her own to claim the victory. “JT” also gained some measure of revenge over Stamp – her tormentor in a 2019 clash for the ONE Muay Thai atomweight world championship.
In the midst of the 2019 NCOV scare, the Chatri Sityodtong-owned combat sports outfit decided to stage the event inside the closed doors, without any spectators.
Still, the headliner lived up to its billing as the determined challenger entered the circle full of confidence and the Thai champion – known for her choreographed entrances – electrified the cavernous venue with the song “Daddy” by PSY.
Todd started off the match swinging, landing low and high kicks onto the slow-starting Thai. Rounds two to five were practically fought on close quarters with neither fighter giving an inch to the opposition. Stamp mixed up her punches and kicks to befuddle Todd, but the Boxing Works product kept moving forward to land her own strikes.
In the end, it was Todd who earned the nod of the three judges to crown herself as the division’s new queen.
In the co-main event, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao captured a second world title with a unanimous decision triumph over Australian Rocky Ogden. The reigning strawweight world champion set up a striking clinic to outclass the game challenger to grab the ONE Super Series Muay Thai crown.
