After a week of Spring Training, big-name players have already hit the Injured List. What was once a quiet and exciting moment when pitchers and catchers reported, numerous players now have minor restrictions and soreness. Some players even joked about not having to run before Spring Training. Once again, injuries have hit the Yankees hard – including Aaron Judge.
Judge will likely miss Opening Day after starting camp with a bothersome shoulder and was limited until being shut down. He has yet to make a plate appearance in Spring Training. His MRI has come back negative, but he will continue to meet with doctors to determine the cause of the problem. Two more tests are currently scheduled, but so far, it’s being described as discomfort in the right pectoral muscle. On the bright side, it has not affected his throwing ability and doesn’t appear to be a long term problem.
Brian Cashman said the time frame for Judge pushes his return past Opening Day. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone commented on his status saying “I really don’t have much for you on it.” “He’s getting a lot of treatment, a lot of eyes and hands on him. Trying to get to the bottom and free him up a little bit.”
There are currently seven outfielders on the Yankees 40-man roster. Stanton is also likely to miss Opening Day and Aaron Hicks won’t be returning until midseason. After Brett Gardner, the options come down to a 22-year old minor leaguer Estevan Florial, Mike Tauchman, and Clint Frazier.
